Transgenderism - Towards a Human Rights Perspective

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis introduces a shift in approaching transgender from its „suppression“ through „authenticity“ and „performativity“ to the latest approach to transgender as „transgressive“, i. e., as transcending gender binary. This shift is put into the context of relating sex and gender as described by feminist theory, whereby it highlights the importance of the theory of gender performativity introduced by Judith Butler, the rise of the queer theory and the transgender studies later. It points out the importance of medicine and its representatives, as well as media representation shaping this phenomenon. In the context of the shift towards „transgression“, transgender people themselves have more power, which is associated with changes in transgender narratives and with changes in terminology. Because the „transgression“ approach of transgender has not been yet introduced in Czechoslovak scholarly context, a larger amount of space is devoted into that. Bachelor thesis outlines the shift from identity politics to transgender as a question of human rights that is also related to beforementioned approach. It enables better understanding of contemporary social events, especially the work of human rights organizations devoted to empowering transgender people.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca predstavuje posun v nahliadaní na transrodovosť od jej „potláčania“ cez „autenticitu“ k „performativite“ smerom k najnovším ponímaniam transrodovosti ako „transgresívnej“, resp. transcendujúcej genderovú binaritu. Tento posun zasadzuje do kontextu toho, ako bol teoretizovaný vzťah pohlavia a genderu vo feministickej teórii, pričom poukazuje najmä na význam teórie performativity Judith Butler, rozvoj queer teórie a neskôr disciplíny transrodových štúdií. Poukazuje na význam medicíny a jej predstaviteľov a mediálnej reprezentácie v utváraní tohto fenoménu. V súvislosti s prechodom k „transgresívnemu“ pojatiu transrodovosti sa však táto moc dostáva viac do rúk samotných trans ľudí, s čím súvisí zmena transrodových naratívov a zmena používanej terminológie. „Transgresívnemu“ pojatiu transrodovosti, doposiaľ v česko-slovenskom kontexte v odbornej literatúre netematizovanému, je venovaného najviac priestoru. V súvislosti s týmto pojatím práca tematizuje presun od politiky identity k nahliadaniu transrodovosti ako ľudsko-právnej témy. Umožňuje tak lepšie pochopenie súčasného spoločenského diania, predovšetkým aktivít ľudskoprávnych organizácií venujúcich sa podpore transrodových ľudí.
