Are Judge Dee stories chinoiserie?: narrative modes in detective stories by Robert van Gulik

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce analyzuje narativní postupy v autorských detektivních románech holandského diplomata, sinologa a spisovatele Roberta hanse van Gulika a porovnává je s povídkami žánru kung-an (detektivní příběhy v hovorovém jazyce) jak v překladu, tak v čínském originále. Má za cíl dokázat, že se jedná o formu šinoazerie, tedy primárně umělecký či užitkový předmět napodobující čínské prvky. Nejdříve seznamuje čtenáře s konceptem šinoazerie a autorem románů, které ma za cíl analyzovat. Dále na základě magisterské práce Daniela Wrighta aplikuje koncept šinoazerie na formu literárního díla. V poslední, analytické, části nejdříve analyzuje způsob použití prologu ve van Gulikových autorských románech a identifikuje jako určující faktor pro analýzu narativních postupů jako šinoazerie vztah vypravěče a postav, který je patrný zejména v užití polopřímé řeči v anglickém originále, čímž se zabývá druhá část analýzy. Nakonec práce dojde k závěru, jaký mají vliv narativní postupy na šinoazerii autorských románů Roberta van Gulik

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis sets to analyze narrative schema in the novels written by dutch diplomat, sinologist and writer, Robert Hans van Gulik and compares his novels to other stories of the gong an genre (detective stories written in vernacular language) in czech translation and Chinese original. It’s goal is to prove that the narrative schema of detective novels written by van Gulik himself is a form of chinoiserie, that is primarily an object of artistic or utility value. Firstly it concentrates on defining the concept of chinoiserie and introduces the author of the novels it sets to analyze. In the analytic part the thesis adopts the concept of chinoiserie for the analysis of literature. In the analytic part the thesis focuses on the use of prologue in van Gulik’s novels and it identifies as a crucial factor for the creation of chinoiserie in the narrative schema relationship of the narrator and characters set mainly by the means of free indirect speech in english original. Then it concludes what this use of narrative schema means for the creation of chinoiserie in the novels of Robert Hans van Gulik.
