Art, Love and what Makes us Humans in Kazuo Ishiguro's Literary Works

Abstract:

Ve svých románech Malíř pomíjivého světa (1986) a Neopouštěj mě (2005), hledá Kazuo Ishiguro odpověď na věčnou otázku jak z oblasti literatury, tak filosofie, co to znamená být člověkem. Diplomová práce analyzuje uvedené romány za účelem nalezení této odpovědi. Ukazuje, že Ishiguro vnímá umění a lásku jako neoddělitelnou součást toho, co dělá člověka člověkem. V Malíři pomíjivého světa je toto stanovisko vyobrazeno skrze uměleckou kariéru hlavního hrdiny, pro kterého je umění hlavním smyslem života a také prostřednictvím jeho vztahu k dceři, který nakonec promění jeho osobnost. V románu Neopouštěj mě, naznačuje Ishiguro, že to, co utváří lidskou duši je schopnost vnímat, oceňovat a tvořit umění a také schopnost vytvářet láskyplné a smysluplné vztahy. Tyto dva aspekty lidského bytí – umění a láska – prostupují oba romány různými způsoby, které jsou v práci podrobně zkoumány. Diplomová práce stručně popisuje Ishigurovo kulturní dědictví, úvahy o všeobecném významu umění ve vztahu k lidské povaze a klade důraz na trvalý zájem umění a literatury vyobrazovat lásku, což potvrzuje její pevné místo v lidských životech. Analýza románu Malíř pomíjivého světa odhaluje nitro hlavního hrdiny, jehož umělecké vyjádření je přímo propojeno se samotným jeho bytím a také lásku k jeho dceři, která má vliv na formování jeho osobnosti. Analýza románu Neopouštěj mě pak apeluje na to, aby hlavní postavy byly vnímány jako plnohodnotní lidé na základě jich schopnosti cítit emoce, vytvářet mezilidské vztahy a cítit lásku. Mimo to je důkazem jejich lidskosti také jejich umělecká tvořivost. Tyto romány odpovídají na otázku, co vytváří lidskou duši. V Ishigurově tvorbě se setkávají dvě různá prostředí – východní a západní – a z obou vyplývá návrh, že samotné naše bytí je utvářeno právě vztahem k umění a lásce. V mezilidských vztazích a vztahu k umění a kráse nachází Ishiguro uspokojivé odpovědi na svou otázku.

Abstract:

In his novels An Artist of the Floating World (1986) and Never Let Me Go (2005) Kazuo Ishiguro suggests answers to the always present questions of what it means to be human. The thesis presents an analysis of the aforementioned novels in pursue of his answers to the matter. It shows that Ishiguro perceives art and love as inseparable from what represents to be human. In An Artist of the Floating World this view is portrayed in the career of the main character for whom art is the main purpose in life, and in his relationship to one of his daughters which eventually brings about change in who he is. In Never Let Me Go Ishiguro suggests that what constitutes human soul is the ability to perceive, appreciate and create art and the capacity to have loving and meaningful relationships. These two aspects to being human, art and love, pervade both novels in different ways which are closely examined in the thesis. The thesis briefly describes Ishiguro’s cultural heritage, accounts for the general significance of art in its inseparability from human nature, and emphasises the lasting interest of art and literature in the portrayal of love affirming its inherent connection to human existence. The examination of Artist uncovers a deep connection between the protagonist’s very being and his artistic expression, and reveals the formative effect of his love for his daughter on who he is. The analysis of Never advocates for the main characters to be considered rightly human on account of their capacity to feel emotions, relate to and love one another, and create art. The two novels touch on the very question of human soul. Coming from two differing backgrounds of the East and West, Kazuo Ishiguro proposes they are forms of art and love that constitute our utmost being. The capacity to relate to one another as family and friends and to perceive, appreciate and create beauty provide Ishiguro with satisfying answers.
