Linguistic Situation, Language Policy of a Selected French-speaking African Country and Specificities of Local French

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the language situation in the former French colony, Algeria. The work starts with a brief overview of geographical situation and history of the country to better understand certain sociolinguistic connections. After a brief presentation of the country's language situation and politics, we started with the main topic of our work, the specificities of the local French language. The specificities were searched on the database Base de données lexicographiques panfrancophone (BDLP) and divided into four categories typical for this area. In our tables, we mainly examined the origin of the words, their meaning, occurrence on the Algerian news server (aps.dz) and whether the word is in the dictionary of metropolitan French. Based on the obtained results, we had the opportunity to find out the actual frequency of usage of these specifications.

Le présent mémoire s'occupe de la situation et de la politique linguistique en Algérie, ancienne colonie française. Le travail commence par un aperçu de la situation géographique et de l'histoire du pays pour que nous puissions comprendre certains contextes sociolinguistiques. Apr?s une br?ve introduction de la situation et politique linguistique du pays, nous avons commencé de traiter le th?me principal de notre travail, les spécificités de la langue française locale. Les termes ont été recherchés sur le site Base de données lexicographiques panfrancophone (BDLP) et répartis en quatre catégories qui sont typiques pour ce territoire. Dans nos tableaux, nous avons observé surtout l'origine des mots, leur signification, leur fréquence d'apparition sur le serveur d'informations algérien (aps.dz) et si le mot est présent dans le dictionnaire du français métropolitain. En vertu des résultats obtenus, nous avons découvert la réelle fréquence d'utilisation des spécificités.
