Economic Analysis of Mechanised Cocoa Production: A study Case of Amenfi West, Ghana

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is aimed at the economic analysis of mechanized cocoa production in the Amenfi West district of Ghana, one of the major cocoa growing areas in the country. Cocoa production is the highest contributor to the GDP growth of the country. However, the sector is threatened by certain factors such as; climate change, disease and pest, mechanization, the financial constraint for farmers and lower producer price rate. The thesis looked at the SWOT analysis of mechanized cocoa production and recommends factors that improve production. Findings from the study indicate that; improvement in cocoa production owes to the contributions made by governments and some non-governmental organizations, whose activities accounted for the strengths and opportunities for farmers. Secondly, mechanization, if improved and expanded can contribute to increased yield projected by the forecast. Among the weakness found was the lack of readiness by the farmers to adapt to technological changes, focus on pest and diseases control, and climate change. The thesis recommends that government inculcate mechanized farming, the introduction of massive education on pest and disease control and adaption of new technologies to boost the Cocoa industry
