Reconstructing Fictional Worlds in Translation: Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day

Abstract:

Ačkoli byla teorie fikčních světů poprvé představena coby filosofický koncept už v 17. století, k jejímu plnému rozvoji došlo před méně než čtyřiceti lety. Tehdy začala být nadšeně přijímána v řadě vědeckých oborů, zejména v oblasti literární vědy a později v naratologii. Translatologie však, zdá se, o teorii fikčních světů přílišný zájem nejeví – příspěvků, které by se v rámci oboru o fikční světy zajímaly, bylo do dnešní doby publikováno jen několik. Cílem této diplomové práce je shromáždit dosud publikovaný výzkum, okomentovat jej a zasadit jej do širšího translatologického kontextu. Stručně představí teorii fikčních světů ve spojení s naratologií (Thomas Pavel, Lubomír Doležel, Ruth Ronenová, Umberto Eco, Mary-Laure Ryanová), příspěvky zkoumající vztah mezi naratologií a translatologií (Haidee Krugerová, Jan-Louis Kruger), a konečně také badatelskou práci, která se zabývá konkrétně translatologií ve spojení s fikčními světy (Renata Kamenická, Mika Loponen, Lubomír Doležel). V praktické části práce jsou hypotézy a metody navrhované v těchto příspěvcích – vliv explicitačního profilu překladatele na ontologický status fikčního světa, aplikace principů tzv. kulturního obratu v translatologii na překlad fikčního svět, literární transdukce – aplikovány na specifický literární překlad, vybrané úryvky románu Against the Day Thomase Pynchona. Teoretické poznatky zmíněných příspěvků a jejich praktická aplikace v rámci jednoho konkrétního textu konečně ústí v návrh jednotné, široce uplatnitelné metody, jejímž účelem je sloužit jako pomůcka pro překladatele stojící před úkolem rekonstruovat složitý fikční svět.

Abstract:

The theory of fictional worlds – first introduced as a philosophical concept in the 17th century but revived less than forty years ago – has been met with an enthusiastic reception in a number of disciplines, especially in literary science and, later, narratology. However, as far as translation studies are concerned, the interest in fictional worlds is rather limited, with only a handful of academic papers written on the topic to date. The primary aim of this thesis is to collect this research, comment on it and place it in the wider context of translation studies; it briefly introduces the theory of fictional worlds as a narratological phenomenon (Thomas Pavel, Lubomír Doležel, Ruth Ronen, Umberto Eco, Mary-Laure Ryan), touches on the research connecting narratology and translation studies (Haidee Kruger, Jan-Louis Kruger) and comments on the work carried out specifically on translation studies and fictional worlds (Renata Kamenická, Mika Loponen, Lubomír Doležel). Furthermore, it also applies the hypotheses and methodologies outlined in this research (the impact of a translator’s explicitation profile on the ontological status of a fictional world; applying the methods introduced by the cultural turn in translation studies to the translation of a fictional world; literary transduction) to a specific literary translation, selected samples of Thomas Pynchon’s Against the Day. Through the exploration of the theoretical concepts outlined in these sources, and through their application to one specific text, the thesis works towards a concise, widely applicable methodology that is meant to serve as a reference for any translator faced with the task of reconstructing a complex fictional world.
