Czech Equivalents of the English -ing Participle

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce České ekvivalenty anglického participia na -ing pojednává o možnostech překladu anglických ingových participií do češtiny. Skládá se ze dvou částí. Teoretická část se zabývá výkladem podstaty anglického participia na -ing, a jeho českých ekvivalentů. Výklad se opírá o práce komparatistní, stylistické, teorii překladu a českou a anglickou mluvnici. Následně jsou stanovena kritéria větněčlenských funkcí, pomocí nichž lze oba prostředky porovnat. Nakonec je objasněna otázka vlivu složek jazykových a kontextových na stylizaci věty při překladu ingových participií do češtiny. Praktická část je věnována analýze překladu anglických ingových participií ve vybraných povídkách Stephena Leacocka, v překladu Františka Vrby. Jazykový materiál je popsán z lingvistického hlediska a pomocí interpretace kontextu je zdůvodněn překladatelův výběr ekvivalentního českého jazykového prostředku.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis Czech equivalents of the English -ing participle is concerned with the translation of the -ing participle clause. This bachelor thesis composes of two parts. The theoretical part deals with the matter of -ing participle and its Czech counterparts. The explanation of the problem is based on the comparative, stylistic approach, translation theory and Czech and English grammar. In addition, the sentence elements criteria are appointed for the comparison of the language means of both language systems. Finally, the influence of language knowledge and the context is discussed. The practical part is devoted to the translation analysis of the -ing participle equivalents in the selected stories written by Stephen Leacock, and translated by František Vrba. The language material is described from the linguistic point of view and the discussion of the translator's choice of corresponding expression is based on context interpretation.
