Reflection of the historical events in literature of German-speaking countries in the novel Radezkymarsch by Joseph Roth

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the historical events in Josep Roth's novel Radetzkymarsch, which is one of the most famous literary works of the period between the two world wars. In this novel, the historical events are reflected in the relationships between the main characters and society before First World War. The the novel draws parallels between the fate of the infulential Trotta family and that of the Habsburgs. During this period, interpersonal relationships and morality were in constant decline, which was reflected in the very existence of the monarchy. The aim of this thesis is to point out the unprofitableness of arming and creating enemies that the Habsburg monarchy was preoccupied with, during the period between the Battle of Solferino and the First World War. The thesis also investigates the impacts of this policy on the nation and on the individual. The main character in the novel is lieutenant Joseph von Trotta, who depite being against arming and warfare, needlessly died in the battle.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá historickými udalosťami v románe Josepa Rotha Radetzkymarsch, ktorý patrí k najvýznamnejším dielam rakúskej i európskej medzivojnovej literatúry. V tomto diele sa historické udalosti odzrkadľujú na základe vzťahov hlavných postáv a spoločenskej klímy pred prvou svetovou vojnou. V diele je vykreslená paralela medzi osudom vplyvnej rodiny Trotta a osudom Habsburskej monarchie v rovnakom čase. Vzťahy a správanie sa v spoločnosti, rovnako ako sociálne pomery sa postupne rozpadávali a toto celé sa odrazilo aj na existencii monarchie. Hlavným cieľom tejto práce bolo poukázanie na nezmyselnosť zbrojenia, vytvárania si nepriateľov, ktorým sa riadila Habsburská monarchia medzi vojnou pri Solferine a Prvou svetovou vojnou. Ďalej je to aj poukázanie na následky takejto politiky vrámci národa ale aj vrámci jednotlivca. Hlavnú úlohu tu zohral mladý poručík Carl Joseph von Trotta, ktorý aj napriek svojmu odporu k armáde a ku zbrojeniu zahynul v boji nezmyselnou smrťou.
