Research of Lactase Persistence in Historical Populations

Abstract:

History of origin of lactase persistence – the ability to digest milk even in adulthood – is one of the issues that need to be addressed nowadays. It represents the adaptation of human genome to increased consumption of fresh milk made possible by the establishing of agriculture and domestication of animals during the Neolithic. Up till now, at least five single-nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified, which are linked to this phenomenon. Although we are dealing with a textbook example of convergent evolution and gene-culture coevolution, many circumstances are still unclear. This bachelor thesis presents a summary of the most important recent findings regarding lactase persistence. The first part is concerned mainly with the description of its genetic nature. The second part describes the evolution of lactase persistence in historical context and introduces the examples of populations, where this trait was succesfully researched by aDNA analyses.

Abstract:

Historie vzniku laktázové perzistence – schopnosti trávit mléko i v dospělosti – je jednou z aktuálních otázek dnešní doby. Představuje adaptaci lidského genomu na zvýšenou konzumaci čerstvého mléka umožněnou vznikem zemědělství a domestikací živočichů v průběhu neolitu. Dosud bylo objeveno minimálně pět jednonukleotidových polymorfismů, které jsou prokazatelně spjaty s tímto jevem. Ačkoli se jedná o učebnicový příklad konvergentní evoluce a genovo-kulturní koevoluce, mnoho souvislostí je stále nejasných. Tato bakalářská práce představuje souhrn nejdůležitějsích dosavadních poznatků o laktázové perzistenci. První část práce se proto soustředí především na popsání její genetické podstaty. Druhá část práce popisuje vývoj laktázové perzistence v rámci historického kontextu a uvádí také příklady populací, u kterých byl tento znak úspěšně prozkoumán pomocí analýz aDNA.
