Translator's Style in Three Czech Translations of Raymond Chandler

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na tři české překlady knih Raymonda Chandlera od Hedy Kovályové, Františka Jungwirtha a Josefa Škvoreckého. Jedním ze základních cílů práce je identifikovat styl překladatele na základě komparativní stylistické analýzy. Práce se soustředí na tři hlavní oblasti: oblast lexikální, syntaktickou a na jednotlivé narativní funkce. Účelem této práce je vytvořit základní referenční rámec na jehož základě by mohla být provedena hlubší stylistická analýza jednotlivých děl a jejich překladů. Základní prvky Chandlerova stylu, určené v rámci výše uvedených kategorií, jsou jednoduchost a stručnost vyjadřování, práce s registrem a s obrazným jazykem a tón hlasu vypravěče. Tyto prvky a jejich typické manifestace byly identifikovány v textu originálu a následně byla provedena analýza, jejíž účelem bylo určit do jaké míry byly tyto prvky v překladech zachovány a k jakým stylistickým posunům a explicitacím došlo. Jednotlivé posuny a explicitace byly analyzovány na úrovni věty a jejich okamžitého stylistického účinku. Následně byl zjištěn jejich výskyt a četnost v daném korpusu na jehož základě mohla být definována určitá tendence nebo překladatelská strategie. Výsledný styl překladatele, jímž je myšlen celkový stylistický dojem překladu, byl poté identifikován jako souhrn jednotlivých tendencí, které mohou být pojmenovány a klasifikovány na úrovni jednotlivých vět. Závěry, kterých bylo dosaženo, se týkají lingvistických a stylistických úskalí překladu z anglického do českého jazyka a také překladatelského stylu, jenž může být dán zkušenostmi jednotlivých překladatelů, ale také jejich překladatelskými cíli a strategiemi.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on three early novels of Raymond Chandler and their Czech translations by Heda Kovályová, František Jungwirth and Josef Škvorecký. The aim the thesis was to define concept of translator’s style and his or her individual translating strategy by means of a closer stylistic analysis. The thesis focused on three main areas: lexis, syntax and narrative functions in an attempt to prepare a stylistic framework in which a closer comparative analysis could be carried out. Basic features of Chandler’s style were classified in the terms of above mentioned categories and the subsequent analysis compares their treatment in the translations and the corresponding explicitation and normalization strategies. The three basic features of Chandler’s style were identified as the brevity of style, the use of register and figurative language and the ironic narrative voice. The method of analysis was to spot explicitation and normalization shifts that appear at the level of individual utterances, to observe their distribution throughout the text and to identify a certain tendency, habits or strategy behind the translator’s style. These shifts were then analyzed with respect to the overall impression which can be classified as translator’s style. Conclusions that were drawn from the analysis refer to the experience and background of the individual translators as well as their supposed translating goals and strategies.
