Gothic resonances in Iain Banks' The Wasp Factory

Abstract:

The thesis will be focusing on the story of 'The Wasp Factory' itself and it will be describing the features, main topics and themes, characters and their behavior and roles set in the storyline which connects all these details and references to the regime of Thatcherism that has been happening during the time of the book's publication and how Iain Banks opposed to it and protested it by his work which gradually reveals the ultimate message. The thesis will also focus on the role of 'The Wasp Factory' and even briefly Banks' other novels in the Gothic literature in general. The prominent features of the novel include a lot of gothic descriptions of murder, violence, aggression and sardonic humor. The goal of the thesis is to show and prove that a novel with such gothic features exists in a relational sense with the culture of its origin and both reflects and modifies the genre it belongs to. Banks' oeuvre in general and this novel in particular are exemplary representations of Banks' opposition to Thatcherite monetarism in the UK, specifically as it affected Scottish culture. The author of the thesis does not agree politically with the author of the novel and is only going to discuss the important topics depicted in the novel.

Abstract:

Tato práce se bude zaměřovat na příběh odehrávající se v románu 'The Wasp Factory' a bude popisovat jeho vlastnosti, hlavní témata a náměty, postavy a jejich chování a role v příběhové linii, která spojuje všechny detaily a odkazy na režim Thatcherismu, který se odehrával v době vydání knihy a jak Iain Banks odporoval a protestoval pomocí svého díla, které postupně odhaluje svoji ultimátní skrytou zprávu. Práce se také celkově zaměří na roli 'The Wasp Factory' a také krátce Banksovy další díla v gotické literatuře. Mezi prominentní rysy románu patří především vylíčení vražd v gotickém stylu, násilí, agrese a sardonický humor. Cílem této práce je názorně ukázat a potvrdit, že román s takovými gotickými vlastnostmi existuje v relačním spojení s kulturou svého původu a také tím odráží a modifikuje žánr, do kterého spadá. Banksova celková práce a přímo tento román jsou názornou ukázkou Banksovy opozice Thatcherovskému monetarismu ve Velké Británii, hlavně proto, jak to ovlivnilo skotskou kulturu. Autor bakalářské práce nesouhlasí politicky s autorem románu a jen probere důležitá témata nacházející se v románu.
