Videoconferencing for non hearing people

Abstract:

Jádrem dnešních videokonferenčních systémů je primárně zvuk, obraz je jakýmsi psychologickým doplňkem. U specifického typu videokonference jako je on-line tlumočení v českém znakovém jazyce (dále ČZJ), jsou výše uvedené hodnoty v opačném sledu. Pro ČZJ, který používá vizuálně motorické prostředky, tj. tvary rukou, jejich postavení a pohyby, mimika, pozice hlavy a horní část trupu, je obraz zásadním prvkem. Cílem této práce je nalézt vhodný videokonferenční systém pro tento typ videokonference, popřípadě optimální nastavení videa, audia, rozmístění videokonferenčních prvků apod., tedy kompletní řešení, které by minimalizovalo problém nedostatku tlumočníků českého znakového jazyka, a to ekonomicky dostupným, kvalitním on-line tlumočením na bázi videokonferenčního systému s použitím Internetu. Následně pak zdokumentovat poznatky, specifika on-line tlumočení a vytvořit „standard“ pro on-line tlumočení znakového jazyka.

Abstract:

Nowadays, videoconferencing systems are primarily based on sound, with image working as a kind of a psychological complement. However, for specific types of videoconference such as on-line interpreting in Czech sign language (CSL), this statement does not apply. For CSL, which uses visual motoric means, i.e. various shapes of hands, their positions and movements, facial expressions, position of the head and upper torso, the image is the essential element. The main aim of this thesis is to find a suitable system for this type of videoconferencing, where the optimal video and audio settings, and deployment of videoconferencing elements etc. would minimize the problem of the lack of Czech sign language interpreters. The solution should be economically affordable, high-quality on-line interpretation based videoconferencing system using the Internet. The secondary goal of the thesis is to document knowledge and specifics of on-line interpretation and to create a "standard" for the on-line sign language interpreting.
