Electronic cigarettes and their impact on users' health - literature review

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je psána formou literární rešerše a je shrnutím dosavadních poznatků o vlivu elektronických cigaret na zdraví jejich uživatelů. Většina informací a poznatků uvedených v této práci pochází ze zahraničních zdrojů. První část práce se zabývá obecnými informacemi spojenými s elektronickou cigaretou. Je zde vysvětlena historie vzniku elektronické cigarety (vaporizéru), od původních návrhů z minulého století až po moderní e-cigaretu pocházející z Číny, odkud se rozšířila do dalších částí světa včetně České republiky. Další kapitoly popisují komponenty, ze kterých se e-cigareta skládá, podle kterých kritérií lze tato zařížení rozdělit, jak je e-cigareta populární mezi uživateli a rozdíly mezi klasickou cigaretou a vaporizéry. Druhá část práce je zaměřena na výsledky provedených studií a výzkumů, jejichž cílem bylo popsat možné negativní důsledky na zdraví uživatelů elektronických cigaret. Z popsaných případů vyplývá, že kromě otrav se vyskytují zranění, která jsou způsobena závadou na baterii. Zatímco některé závěry studií tvrdí, že užívání e-cigaret nemá negativní vliv na chrup, jiné studie zaměřené na orální zdraví ukazují na možné zhoršení stavu chrupu a dásní, avšak vapování podle nich není tak nebezpečné jako klasické kouření. Užívání e-cigaret během těhotenství může porušit placentu a poškodit plod. Toto je však připisováno účinkům nikotinu. Další negativní vlivy na zdraví se týkají respiračních onemocnění, e-cigarety mohou ovlivnit astma a výskyt chronické bronchitidy. Co se týče nádorových onemocnění, látky obsažené ve výparech z e-cigarety mohou představovat riziko vzniku novotvaru. Užívání elektronických cigaret může vést k většímu kardiovaskulárnímu riziku, jelikož e-cigarety ovlivňují krevní tlak, tepovou frekvenci a oxidační stres.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis is written in the form of literary research. The work summarizes existing knowledge about the impact of e-cigarettes on users´ health. The majority of information and findings, which were presented in this thesis, originated from foreign sources. The first part of the thesis deals with general information associated with electronic cigarette, explaining the history of electronic cigarette (personal vaporizer) from earliest projects to modern e-cigarette that was invented in China. E-cigarettes were spread to different parts of the world including the Czech Republic. The following chapters describe components of e-cigarette, their classification, popularity among users as well as differences between combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The second part of the thesis is aimed at results of studies and researches. The main objective of mentioned studies was to evaluate possible health impact of e-cigarettes. Apart from poisonings, the literature describes reports of other injuries, mainly caused by battery malfunctioning. While some studies suggest that using e-cigarettes is not harmful for teeth, others focused on oral health indicate poorer state of gums and teeth. According to researchers who presented these studies, vaping is less harmful than conventional smoking. Using e-cigarettes during pregnancy may lead to placental abruption and it can damage the fetus. These impacts are often related to the effects of nicotine. Further negative effects involve respiratory diseases. E-cigarettes can influence asthma and chronic bronchitis. Vapour contains many substances which can increase potential risk of tumour. Using e-cigarettes can cause higher cardiovascular risk because e-cigarettes affect blood pressure, heart rate and oxidative stress.
