Debate between Realists and Liberals in the level of Alliance theory: Explanatory power of main theoretical approaches

Abstract:

Tématem této práce jsou teorie aliancí a aplikace realistického a liberálního přístupu na konkrétní případové studie. Výzkum aliancí byl vždy doménou autorů hlásících se k realistickému paradigmatu, ale od osmdesátých let se do výzkumu aliancí stále častěji pouštěli také liberálové. V této práci jsou oba hlavní přístupy představeny, od kontextu jejich vzniku přes hlavní premisy, skrze něž vysvětlují vznik, fungování, zánik či přežití aliancí. Coby případové studie byly vybrány tři uskupení vzniknuvší v podobném historickém kontextu: trilaterální aliance mezi Austrálií, Novým Zélandem a Spojenými státy, aliance mezi Spojenými státy a Filipínami a aliance SEATO. Aplikace hlavních myšlenek obou teoretických směrů na vybrané aliance by pak měla zodpovědět otázku, zda se již liberalismus dokázal na poli zkoumání aliancí plně etablovat a vyrovnat či dokonce překonat realistické paradigma.

Abstract:

Central topic of this thesis is the alliance theory and application of the realist and liberal approach to particular case studies. Alliance research used to be sphere of authors connected to the realistic paradigm, but since 1980s´ liberals tended to research alliances more often. In this thesis both main approaches are introduced, from the context of their creation, through the ideas used to explain creation, operation, decline or endurance of alliances. As the case studies three pacts created in the similar historical context were chosen: trilateral alliance between Australia, New Zealand and the United States, alliance between the United States and the Philippines and SEATO. Application of main ideas of both theoretical approaches on the chosen case studies should answer the question whether liberalism managed to fully establish itself in the alliance research and whether liberalism managed to equalize or even surpassed realistic paradigm.
