The image of Bosnian Muslims in Czech travel and memoir literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is a comparative analysis of Czech travel and memoir literature describing the authors’ personal experiences of travelling and living in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1868 – 1918. The focus of the thesis is to trace the images of Bosnian Muslims in seven travelogues written by six male authors and one female author. The images and perceptions of Bosnian Muslims in the travel accounts are analysed on three levels; part of the thesis is devoted to the clustering of representations, stereotypes, prejudices and the analysis of the terminology used in describing Bosnian Muslims, another part of the thesis focuses on the way Bosnian Muslim women and their gender roles are portrayed in the travel accounts in question. The main research question is the analysis of Czech descriptions of Bosnian islamic practices and institutions in travelogues. The thesis enriches academic discourse by analysing the interactions between religion, culture and identities in the context of bicultural contacts through a systematic analysis of Czech representations of Bosnian Muslims and their interpretation in the context of postcolonial theories.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca je komparatívnou analýzou českej cestopisnej a spomienkovej literatúry, ktorá popisuje osobné skúsenosti autorov z ciest a života v Bosne a Hercegovine medzi rokmi 1868 – 1918. Náplňou práce je sledovanie obrazov bosnianskych moslimov v siedmych cestopisoch, ktoré spísali šiesti mužskí autori a jedná ženská autorka. Obrazy a predstavy o bosnianskych moslimoch v cestopisných správach sú analyzované na troch úrovniach; čast práce sa venuje koštruovaniu reprezentácií, sterotypov, predsudkov a analýze použitej terminologie pri opise bosnianskych moslimov, ďalšia časť práce sa sústreďuje na spôsob, akým sú bosnianske moslimky a ich rodové roly zobrazované v daných cestopisoch. Hlavnou výskumnou otázkou je analýza českých opisov bosnianskych náboženských praktík a inštitúcií v cestopisoch. Práca obohacuje akademický diskurz o rozbor interakcií medzi náboženstvom, kultúrou a identitami v kontexte kontaktov medzi dvoma kultúrami prostredníctvom systematickej analýzy českých reprezentácií bosnianskych moslimov a ich interpretácie v kontexte postkoloniálnych teórií.
