Uncertain Season: Slaviafilm throughout the period of silent film

Abstract:

The establishment of independent Czechoslovak state in October 1918 caused a boom in the movie business. Influence of Viennese film rental companies and their affiliates which dominated in Czech lands during the existence of Austria - Hungary, quickly decreased. Those companies have lost their positions at the Czechoslovakian market. In a short time they were replaced by domestic movie rental companies, although some of them continued, linked to the capital from Vienna. This included the rental company Slaviafilm, founded in 1918 by Tereza Cervenkova. In the same year there is a change in ownership of the company as it is taken by Alexander Kolowrat, founder of the Viennese film production concern Saschafilm. Kolowrat transformed Slaviafilm in 1921 into a joint stock company, thus it becomes one of the largest domestic film rentals. After a boom period in Czechoslovak film business and industry, however, it sets a period of protracted crises caused by external factors as well as by an unhealthy business environment in which the number of rentals exceeded the needs of the domestic market. Slaviafilm as one of the few companies operated the entire period of silent films and therefore may serve as an example of how the conditions reflected in the management and functioning of Czechoslovak movie rentals.

Abstract:

Vznik samostatného Československého štátu v októbri 1918 spôsobil rozmach filmového obchodu. Vplyv viedenských filmových požičovní a ich filiálok, ktoré počas existencie Rakúsko – Uhorska v českých krajinách dominovali, rýchlo slabol a boli nútené sa zo svojich pozícií na československom trhu stiahnuť. V krátkom čase boli nahradené domácimi filmovými požičovňami, hoci niektoré boli i naďalej napojené na viedenský kapitál. K týmto požičovniam patrila i spoločnosť Slaviafilm, založená v roku 1918 Terezou Červenkovou. V tom istom roku dochádza k zmene vlastníckych pomerov a firmu preberá Alexander Kolowrat, zakladateľ viedenskej filmovej výrobne Saschafilm. Kolowrat transformuje Slaviafilm v roku 1921 na akciovú spoločnosť, čím sa z nej stáva jedna z najväčších tuzemských požičovní. Po období konjunktúry v československom filmovom obchode a priemysle však nastáva obdobie vleklej krízy, spôsobenej tak vonkajšími činiteľmi ako aj nezdravým podnikateľským prostredím, v ktorom počet požičovní presahoval potreby domáceho trhu. Slaviafilm ako jedna z mála spoločností pretrvala celé obdobie nemého filmu, môže teda zároveň slúžiť ako príklad toho, ako sa odrazili pomery vo filmovom obchode na hospodárení a fungovaní konkrétnej filmovej požičovne.
