Portraits of Brno Conservatory Teachers

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vytvořit soubor černobílých fotografických portrétů pedagogů Konzervatoře Brno a popsat způsob skenování černobílých fotografických negativů. V rámci fotografické části práce byl vytvořen soubor sedmnácti portrétů pedagogů smyčcového oddělení konzervatoře v duchu realistického portrétu. Z negativu velikosti 6x7 byly učiněny výřezy podle individuálních charakteristik každého portrétu. Soubor obsahuje celkem čtyři typy výřezů: čtvercový, 2x3, 3x4 a 6x7. Negativy byly digitalizovány pro tisk do rozměrů 30x40 cm. Informatická část práce nejprve uvádí čtenáře do problematiky skenování černobílých fotografických negativů a následně popisuje konkrétní metodu skenování použitou při přípravě portrétů v této práci. Dále je proveden experiment, jehož cílem je popsat možnosti zde použité metody pro skenování předloh, u nichž došlo k chybám v procesu exponometrie či zpracování černobílého negativu. Závěrem jsou zmíněny použité úpravy fotografií a jejich finální příprava pro tisk a archivaci. Praktickým výstupem této práce je maketa sedmnácti portrétů vytištěných v rozměrech zhruba 18x24 cm na litografickém papíru velikosti A4 a také soubor digitalizovaných negativů před finální úpravou.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to create a collection of black and white photographic portraits of the Brno Conservatory teachers, and to describe a way of scanning black and white photographic negatives. As for the photographic part, a collection of seventeen portraits of pedagogues of the string department of the conservatory was created in the style of realistic portrait. The 6x7 negatives were cropped according to individual features of each portrait. The photographs in the collection take a form of four different sizes: a square, 2x3, 3x4, and 6x7. The negatives were digitized for print of up to 30x40 cm. The informatics-related part of the work first introduces the reader into the topic of black and white negative scanning, and then describes a specific method used in scanning the conservatory portraits. Next, an experiment is carried out. The goal of the experiment is to describe the abilities of the present method to handle material which has been subject to errors in exponometry or black and white negative processing. The thesis concludes with remarks on the tools used to edit the portraits, and on their final preparation for print and archive. The practical output of this work is an album of seventeen portraits printed in size of about 18x24 cm on a litographic A4 paper, as well as a collection of digitized negatives before their final edit.
