The modern German dramatic literaure on the North Bohemian stage in Teplice in 1924-1933

Abstract:

The presented thesis is a literary-theatrological study in the context of regional history, which deals with German-written modern drama of the 20’s and 30’s of the 20th century on the Northern Bohemian multicultural theatre scene. The study is a part of the author’s project which monitors and documents Teplice theatrical history on the stage of the City Theatre. The thesis contributes to the reconstruction of German literary drama culture on the Czech territory and to the mapping of the regional theatrical “world” and the artistic deeds in this notable institution.The thesis is divided into six parts. The first chapter is a classical exposition and contains methodological analysis. The second chapter brings a brief overview of the monumental building of the new Teplice city theatre and of the ceremonial act with pro-German rhetoric, followed by the phenomenon of the Czech performances in the theatre and by the comparison of two – Czech and German – expressionist plays:Čapek’s „Věc Makropulos“ and Musil’s „Vinzenz und die Freundin bedeutender Männer“. The third chapter reconstructs first ten years (1924-1933) of theatre events in the new City Theatre in Teplice. It offers personal profiles on individual theatre directors,characterises their leadership, recounts their success and failures, and defines and compares their artistic styles and attempts. The fourth and the fifth chapters are the focal point of the thesis as they determine local theatre institution drama development and reflect synchronical literary trends. based on the analysis of the ten-year theatre repertoire of the previews the both chapters assemble the mosaic of theatre plays and their authors who represent the development of the theatre culture from Vienna Modernism through expressionism and the New Pragmatism to the Epic Theatre. The concept namely concerns the following - Frank Wedekind, Carl Sternheim, Georg Kaiser, Carl Zuckmayer, Bertolt Brecht and Viena’s Arthur Schnitzler whose importance and frequency of staging won him an extra space in a separate chapter V. Interpretation and comparison of the plays generated a contemporary social-critical picture of the society showing different concepts of mutual relationship between men and women, women’s and men’s self-reflection, self-conception, and self-respect. The contemporary drama choice in Teplice shows the attractivity of the central topic line dealing with strange, often deformed, love-affairs and matrimonies and love struggles followed by social role distribution. The thesis brings new never before publicised information in the form of historical drama reviews from the contemporary Teplice press describing local performances, their interpretations, their public acceptance and assess the actors’ and stage managers’ performance. The thesis also offers description of the unique attributes of the second City Theatre in Teplice praising its complexity, capacity, enormous endurance of the artistic leadership and devoted public support. It also reminds diversity and quality of the repertoire, and also the primacy in the process of staging new drama within the Czechoslovak territory primarily regarding modern German drama accentuating social-critical dramas and delicate issues, which brought the theatre credit for enlightment in the sphere of interpersonal relationships.

Předložená práce představuje literárně teatrologickou studii v kontextu regionální historie,zabývající se německy psanou moderní dramatikou 20. a 30. let 20. století na severočeské multikulturní divadelní scéně. Tvoří součást mého projektu, který sleduje a dokumentuje teplické divadelní dění na scéně Městského divadla. Tato práce chce především přispět k rekonstrukci německé literárně divadelní kultury na českém území a k zmapování regionálního divadelního „světa“ a umělecké linie této významné instituce. Je členěna do šesti kapitol. První kapitola je pojata jako klasická expozice a obsahuje metodologický rozbor. Po stručné historii monumentální stavby nového Teplického městského divadla a slavnostního aktu s proněmeckou rétorikou je druhá kapitola věnována fenoménu českých představení na zdejším divadle a pokusu o srovnání dvou expresionistických dramat z české a německé tvorby, uvedených v prvním roce jeho existence. Jde o Čapkovu „Věc Makropulos“ a Musilovu hru „Vinzenz und die Freundin bedeutender Männer“. Třetí kapitola rekonstruuje prvních deset let (1924-1933) divadelních událostí a počinů na novém Městském divadle v Teplicích. Předkládá osobnostní medailony jednotlivých ředitelů, charakterizuje jejich vedení, líčí úspěchy a neúspěchy a definuje a porovnává jejich umělecké styly a snahy. Čtvrtá a pátá kapitola jsou těžištěm této práce a determinují dramatickou vývojovou linii místní divadelní instituce, která reflektuje soudobé literární směry. Na základě analýzy desetiletého divadelního repertoáru premiér vytvářejí mozaiku divadelních her a jejich autorů, reprezentujících vývoj divadelní literatury od Vídeňské moderny, přes expresionismus a Novou věcnost k Epickému divadlu. Jmenovitě tvoří tento koncept Arthur Schnitzler, Frank Wedekind, Carl Sternheim, Georg Kaiser, Carl Zuckmayer a Bertolt Brecht, přičemž vídeňskému dramatikovi je z důvodu jeho fenomenálnosti nejhranějšího autora věnována zvláštní kapitola (kapitola V.). Interpretací a komparací her vznikl sociálně kritický obraz společnosti na ukázce různého pojetí vzájemného vztahu ženy a muže a na znázornění ženské a mužské sebereflexe, sebekoncepce a sebeúcty v tehdejších poměrech. Právě zvláštní a většinou zdeformované milostné a manželské vztahy a milostné zápolení slabšího a silnějšího pohlaví s následným rozdělením rolí ve společnosti představují centrální tematickou linii v Teplicích uvedených dramat. Práce přináší nové, nepublikované informace v podobě recenzí dramat z teplického tisku, které popisují místní inscenace, jejich ztvárnění a ohlas a líčí herecké i režisérské výkony. Studie také dokládá jedinečné atributy druhého Městského divadla v Teplicích, které tkví v komplexnosti a kapacitě divadelní budovy, enormní vytrvalosti uměleckého vedení i obětavé podpoře veřejnosti, v pestrosti a kvalitě repertoáru i primátu v uvádění aktuálních dramat pro celou Československou republiku. Všímá si zejména průkopnictví moderní německé dramatiky, akcentu na sociálně kritická dramata a ožehavých témat a s tím související zásluhy o osvětu v mezilidských a milostných vztazích.
