Concept of Celibacy within the Benedictine Order

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá benediktinským pojetím celibátu a jeho vyjádřením v Řeholi Benediktově (ŘB). Úvodní část práce je zaměřena na zformování pojetí zdrženlivosti v judaistické a helénistické tradici a jejich vlivu na vývoj pojetí celibátu v raném křesťanství. Dále se práce zabývá vznikem mnišství na Východě křesťanského světa, kde byly položeny základy mnišské řehole, pojetím celibátu zakotveným v učení církevních Otců západní církve a historickou situací této církve v době bezprostředně předcházející vzniku benediktinského řádu. Klíčovou částí práce pak je nástin pojetí celibátu v Benediktově řeholi s ohledem na vznik benediktinského mnišství a souvislosti vzniku Benediktovy řehole. Závěrečná část je pokusem o velmi stručný nástin vlivu ŘB na vývoj mnišství v průběhu šestého až jedenáctého století a vylíčení snah o reformu benediktinského mnišství. Závěr obsahuje rozvinutí myšlenky výjimečnosti a univerzalismu ŘB v kontextu západního mnišství raného středověku.

Abstract:

This work is concerned with the Benedictine concept of celibacy and its expression in the Rules of Saint Benedict. The first part of the work targets the shaping of the concept of celibacy in the Jewish and Hellenistic tradition and their influence on the development of the concept of celibacy in the early Christianity. Then the work is engaged in the beginning of the East monasticism, where the foundations of the monastic rules were layed. It also deals with the concept of celibacy expressed in the teaching of the western church Fathers and the historical situation of that church in the time before founding of the Benedictine order. The key part of the work is the outline of the concept of celibacy portrayed in the Rules of Saint Benedict considering the birth of the Benedictine monasticism and the context of the foundation of the Rules of Saint Benedict. The last part of the work is an attempt to a quite brief summary of the influence of the Rules of Saint Benedict on the monastic evolution from the sixth to the eleventh centuries. It also depicts the reform efforts in the Benedictine monasticism. The epilogue develops the idea of the exceptionality and universalism of the Rules of Saint Benedict in the context of the western monasticism in the early Middle Ages.
