The influence of individual factors on the rating of attractiveness of male voices from a female perspective

Abstract:

The aim of this work was to examine the rate of attractiveness of the male voice from women’s perspective, depending on the measured average fundamental frequency of twelve voice recordings consisting of meaningless speech. Voice recordings were obtained from six men aged between 20-30 and they were evaluated (in random order) by 176 women aged between 18-30 (m = 22.39; sd = 2.29) in two forms of an online questionnaire. Research in addition to the basic ratio of average voice height vs. the average level of attractiveness, the expected results of which are based on numerous previous studies, also works with the possible influence of the projection of the content of the recording on the amount of evaluated attractiveness. It also tests the influence of individual factors of respondents on their evaluation, specifically their phase of the menstrual cycle and the personality profile created according to the Big Five model. The study supported the first hypothesis established on the basis of previous research on the female preference for deeper male voices, the tightness of the relationship between voice height and the average rate of attractiveness on the eight-point Likert scale was R2 = 45%. However, the research was not able to support the second hypothesis based on a positive correlation between ovulation and the overall rate of attractiveness of male voices. The research also aims to compare two types of voice pitch alternations – deliberate (voluntary) and digital - thus combining the idea of previous research using only of one or the other form of voice alternations in this combined experiment – to the non-alternated version of men’s recordings. Finally, the research debates the influence of the listener's personality traits on the preference for a specific type of voice.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce bolo preskúmať hodnotenie atraktivity mužského hlasu z pohľadu žien na základe zmeranej priemernej fundamentálnej frekvencie dvanástich hlasových prejavov v nezmyselnej reči. Hlasové záznamy boli získané od šiestich mužov vo veku 20-30 rokov, distribuované boli v náhodnom poradí v dvoch formách online dotazníku. Nahrávky boli hodnotené 176 ženami vo veku 18-30 rokov (m=22,39; sd=2,29). Výskum okrem základného pomeru priemerná výška hlasu vs. priemerná výška atraktivity, ktorého predpokladané výsledky vychádzajú z početných predchádzajúcich štúdií, tiež pracuje s možným vplyvom projekcie obsahu nahrávky na výšku ohodnotenej atraktivity. Predmetom výskumu je aj vplyv individuálnych faktorov respondentiek na ich hodnotenie, konkrétne ich fáza menštruačného cyklu a osobnostný profil vytvorený podľa modelu Big Five. Štúdia podporila prvú hypotézu stanovenú na základe predchádzajúcich výskumov o ženskej preferencii hlbších mužských hlasov, tesnosť vzťahu výšky hlasu k priemernému bodovému ohodnoteniu atraktivity na osembodovej Likertovej škále vyšla vo výške R2= 45%. Výskum však nepodporil druhú hypotézu vychádzajúcu z pozitívnej korelácie ovulácie a miery hodnotenia mužských hlasov. Výskum si tiež dáva za cieľ porovnať dva druhy alternácie výšky hlasu – dobrovoľnou a digitálnou cestou – kombinuje teda v experimente separátne porovnávania jednej alebo druhej hlasovej alternácie predchádzajúcich výskumov. Záver výskumu je venovaný polemike o vplyve osobnostných rysov poslucháča na preferenciu konkrétneho typu hlasového prejavu.
