Library for Boolean function manipulation in Rust and Python

Abstract:

Práce s booleovskými funkcemi je základním aspektem různých disciplín v informatice. V ekosystému jazyka Python existuje citelná mezera v oblasti vysoce výkonných knihoven určených k tomuto účelu. Tato práce tuto mezeru vyplňuje implementací nové knihovny pro manipulaci s booleovskými funkcemi v jazyce Rust, která podporuje reprezentaci booleovských funkcí ve formě stromů výrazů, pravdivostních tabulek a binárních rozhodovacích diagramů. Knihovna je integrována do jazyka Python prostřednictvím frameworku PyO3, aby bylo zajištěno její snadné používání. Byly provedeny výkonnostní testy, které porovnávají výkon této nové knihovny v jazyce Rust s existující knihovnou v jazyce Python pro manipulaci s booleovskými funkcemi, PyEDA. Výsledky ukázaly, že knihovna Rust konzistentně překonává PyEDA, i když spíše s konstantním faktorem než s asymptotickým zlepšením. Výsledná knihovna, veřejně dostupná na GitHubu pod licencí MIT, ukazuje, že lze vytvořit jednotné rozhraní nad různými reprezentacemi booleovských funkcí a že knihovna v jazyce Rust s vazbami na Python může dosáhnout významného zvýšení výkonu.

Abstract:

Boolean function manipulation is a fundamental aspect of various disciplines in computer science. There is a notable gap in the Python ecosystem for high-performance libraries dedicated to this purpose. This thesis addresses this gap by implementing a new Boolean function manipulation library in Rust, which supports representations of Boolean functions as expression trees, truth tables, and binary decision diagrams. The library is integrated into Python through the PyO3 framework to ensure ease of use. Benchmarks were performed to compare the performance of the new Rust library against an existing Python library for Boolean function manipulation, PyEDA. The results demonstrated that the Rust library consistently outperforms PyEDA, albeit by a constant factor rather than by an asymptotic improvement. The resulting library, publicly available on GitHub under the MIT license, demonstrates that a uniform interface can be established over different Boolean function representations and that Rust, with Python bindings, can achieve significant performance gains.
