The Relationship Between Locus of Control and Medically Unexplained Symptoms

Abstract:

S přibývajícím počtem pacientů s medicínsky nevysvětlenými symptomy (MUS) roste i důležitost informací, které objasňují jejich vznik a jejich průběh. Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo ověřit, zda může být změna intenzity MUS vysvětlena pomocí interních či externích přesvědčení člověka o jeho zdraví odpovídající dimenzím konstruktu multidimenzionálního health locus of control (MHLoC). Výzkumný soubor tvořila skupina 118 respondentů s MUS a skupina 145 respondentů, kteří těmito symptomy netrpěli. Design studie měl formu elektronického dotazníkového šetření, které zahrnovalo dvě měření intenzity pociťovaných symptomů dotazníkem Screening for Somatoform Symptoms - 2 a dvě měření dimenzí MHLoC pomocí Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale s časovým intervalem šesti měsíců. Výsledky naznačují, že mezi změnou intenzity MUS v čase a interní dimenzí MHLoC ani externími dimenzemi MHLoC neexistuje signifikantní vztah. Je proto nutné dále zkoumat, jaké faktory mohou zabránit vzniku MUS či jejich prognózu ovlivnit.

Abstract:

With the increasing number of patients with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS), the importance of information that clarifies their origin and progression is increasing. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to verify whether the change in intensity of MUS can be explained by internal or external human health beliefs corresponding to the dimensions of the construct of the multidimensional health locus of control (MHLoC). The research group consisted of a group of 118 respondents with MUS and a group of 145 respondents who did not suffer from these symptoms. The project study took the form of an electronic questionnaire survey, which included two measurements of the intensity of the symptoms felt using a questionnaire called Screening of Somatoform Symptoms - 2 and two measurements of the MHLoC dimensions using a questionnaire called Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale with a six-month time interval. The results suggest that there is no significant relationship between the change in MUS intensity over time and the internal dimension of MHLoC or the external dimensions of MHLoC. Therefore, it is necessary to further investigate which factors can prevent or influence the progression of the MUS.
