Integration, interpretation and validation of geophysical methods in archeological kontext

Abstract:

The thesis presents the results of the comparison between geophysical prospection and archaeological excavation conducted at ten case-studies sites. The main focus is on the integration of geomagnetic method into archaeological research. The method that has been chosen for the comparison of the prospection and excavation results allows us to obtain a quantitative evaluation of the prospection effectivity from large-scale sites with numerous identified geophysical anomalies and archaeologically documented objects. During the analysis, several factors (geological settings, position errors, morphological characteristics of individual types of archaeological objects) have been tested as regards their influence on the effectivity of geophysical prospection. The chosen spatial correlation method can reveal the level of consistency not only as regards the prediction of objects (true positive - 100% spatial correlation between an anomaly and an excavated object), but also in case of “empty” areas (true negative), hence revealing areas without the presence of archaeological situations. Application of the same methodology to other sites may help to define the benefits of geophysical prospection for archaeological research in future. As a result, archaeogeophysics could take a firm place among the accepted archaeological methods in our region, making full use of its potential to "see underground" in a non-destructive way.

Abstract:

Predložená práca prezentuje v jednotnej forme výsledky porovnania geofyzikálnej prospekcie a archeologického výskumu na desiatich vybraných lokalitách. Dôraz je kladený na integráciu geomagnetického prieskumu do archeologického výskumu. Spôsob, ktorý bol pre porovnanie prospekcie a exkavácie zvolený, umožňuje získať kvantitatívne ohodnotenie efektivity prospekcie z plošne rozsiahlych lokalít s množstvom identifikovaných anomálií a archeologicky zdokumentovaných objektov. V priebehu štúdia bolo testovaných niekoľko faktorov, ktoré majú vplyv na efektivitu geofyzikálnej prospekcie (geologické prostredie, pozičné chyby, morfologické charakteristiky typu objektu). Zvolená metóda priestorovej korelácie umožňuje kvantitatívne vyjadriť zhodu nie len v predikcii objektov (true positive – 100% priestorová korelácia medzi anomáliou a archeologickým objektom) ale aj prázdnych plôch (true negative) a pomáha tak identifikovať oblasti bez archeologických situácii. Aplikáciou rovnakej metodiky na ďalších lokalitách bude do budúcna možné vytvoriť bázu umožňujúcu jasne definovať prínos geofyzikálnej prospekcie pre archeologické bádanie. Ostáva len dúfať, že to umožní archeogeofyzikálnej prospekcii zaujať pevné miesto medzi akceptovanými archeologickými metódami aj v našom regióne a naplno tak využiť je potenciál „vidieť pod zem“ nedeštruktívnym spôsobom.
