Cohesion and functional grammar in translation: A contrastive analysis of Patanjali's’s Yoga Sutras

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou kohezních vztahů a schémat tematického vývoje dvou rozdílných překladů Patan͂jaliho Jóga sūter. Texty jsou nejprve analyzovány na základě pojetí M. A. K. Hallidaye o distribuci tématu a rématu. Dále pojednává o vývoji tematických schémat dle teorie Františka Daneše o organizaci textu a nakonec rozebírá kohezní prostředky z pohledu teorie M. A. K. Hallidaye a Ruqaiya Hasan. Zároveň se práce zaměřuje na rozdíly v tendencích autorů, jejichž verze původního textu tvoří jádro samotné analýzy. Nejpodstatnější obsah práce sestává ze tří hlavní částí, z nichž první poskytuje teoretický přehled potřebný k vypracování dalších dvou částí. Část druhá se zabývá analýzou z hlediska funkční gramatiky a část třetí zkoumá kohezní vztahy mezi jednotlivými větami. Závěrem jsou uvedena obecná zjištění týkající se rozdílů mezi překlady na právě uvedených lingvistických úrovních.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with analysis of cohesive relations and patterns of thematic progression of two different translations of Patan͂jali’s Yoga Sūtras. First, it analyses the material on the basis of M. A. K. Halliday’s concept of Theme-Rheme distribution, then it discusses the development of thematic patterns according to František Daneš’s theory of the organisation of the text and finally, it is concerned with cohesive devices from the point of view of the theory coined by M. A. K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan. Simultaneously, the focus is held on the different tendencies of the translators whose versions of the original text create the core of the analysis. The main body of the thesis consists of three main parts, the first one of which provides the theoretical background necessary for the analysis that follows in the other two parts. The second part is concerned with the analysis from the point of view of functional grammar, while the third part examines cohesive relations of the individual clauses. The conclusion presents the general findings regarding the differences between the two translations on the linguistic levels just stated.
