Reflection of Metamorphoses of a Modern Time in Short Stories of Three Significant British Female Novelists

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to introduce three different and significant authors- Angela Carter, Mich?le Roberts a Fay Weldon. It deals with an analysis and interpretation of selected short stories published in these short story collections: Michele Roberts During Mother's Absence, Fay Weldon's Nothing to Wear and Nowhere to Hide and Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber. The thesis concentrates on the reflection of the modern world in their prose with the focus on gender issues. These novelists give detailed descriptions of the female characters in their prose to express their opinions. In the analysis of the short stories, the thesis will therefore attempt to prove that the heroines are characteristic for their prose. Finally, the thesis tries to classify these authors in the context of contemporary British literature and to evaluate their artistic contribution.

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl představit tři různé významné britské autorky- Angelu Carter, Michele Roberts a Fay Weldon. Zabývá se rozborem a interpretací jejich krátkých příběhů ze sbírek The Bloody Chamber od Angely Carter, During Mother?s Absence od Michele Roberts a Nothing to Wear and Nowhere to Hide od Fay Weldon. Práce ukazuje, jak se v jejich krátkých příbězích odrážejí problémy moderní doby, obzvláště pak otázky genderu. O těchto autorkách je známo, že ve svých prózách podávají podrobný popis ženských postav, aby měli prostor k vyjádření svých názorů. Rozbor se proto hlavně zaměřuje na porovnání postav hrdinek, které jsou charakteristické pro jejich tvorbu. Dále se práce snaží zařadit autorky do proudu současné britské literatury a zhodnotit jejich umělecký přínos.
