The Portrayal of Women in American Films about the Beginning of the AIDS Epidemic

Anotace:

Práce se zabývá zobrazením žen v amerických filmech o počátku epidemie AIDS. Je založena na analýze šesti filmů vytvořených v letech 1985-2014: Časný mráz (An Early Frost, 1985), Společník na dlouhé trati (Longtime Companion, 1989), A kapela hrála dál (And the Band Played On, 1993), Pacient číslo nula (Zero Patience, 1993), seriál Andělé v Americe (Angels in America, 2003) a Stejná srdce (The Normal Heart, 2014). Cílem práce je analyzovat postavy žen ve filmech a zjistit, jestli a jak se jejich zobrazení liší s časem nebo mezi různými žánry. Kromě toho popisuje stereotypy, které se ve filmech objevují. První kapitola krátce popisuje gay komunitu ve druhé polovině dvacátého století, věnuje se historii epidemie AIDS v osmdesátých letech v USA a popisuje, jaký vliv to mělo na komunitu a její vztahy se zbytkem společnosti. Druhá kapitola se soustředí na často přehlíženou roli žen během epidemie – doktorek, zdravotních sester a dobrovolnic, se zvláštním důrazem na lesbičky a jejich osobní zkušenosti. Další část je rozdělena do několika podkapitol, z nichž každá se věnuje jednomu z vybraných filmů a analyzuje postavy žen, jejich osobnost, podobnosti a rozdíly s ostatními filmy a případné stereotypy. V závěrečné kapitole shrnuji a vysvětluji výsledky analýzy.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the portrayal of women in American films about the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. It is based on the analysis of six films made between years 1985 and 2014: An Early Frost (1985), Longtime Companion (1989), And the Band Played On (1993), Zero Patience (1993), the miniseries Angels in America (2003) and The Normal Heart (2014). The thesis intends to analyze the female characters in the movies and identify whether and how the portrayal changes in time or in different genres. In addition, it describes the stereotypes appearing in the films. The first chapter shortly describes the gay community in the second half of the 20th century, then provides the history of the AIDS epidemic in the United States in the 1980s and describes how it influenced the community and its relationship with the rest of the society. The second chapter focuses on the often overlooked role of women in the epidemic – the doctors, nurses and volunteers, with a special attention to lesbians and their personal experience. The next part is divided into subchapters, each of them dealing with one chosen film, which analyze the female characters, their personalities, similarities or differences with other films, and possible stereotypes. In the final chapter, I sum up the results of the analysis and explain them.
