Attitudes about psychotherapy before the university studies and the influence of attachment style

Abstract:

Cílem výzkumu bylo replikovat studii Hillové a kol. (2012) v českých podmínkách a zjistit, jaké jsou postoje začínajících studentů psychologie k psychoterapii. Začínající studenti psychologie, kteří nikdy nebyli v psychoterapii a neabsolvovali žádnou přednášku z psychologie na vysoké škole, byli v polostrukturovaném rozhovoru dotazováni na jejich postoje k psychoterapii. Tyto rozhovory byly analy-zovány kvalitativně (obsahová analýza) i kvantitativně, přičemž byl sledován vliv citové vazby participantů na jejich postoje k psychoterapii (dotazník ECR). Výsledky výzkumu byly porovnány s původními závěry studie Hillové a kol. (2012). Postoje začínajících studentů psychologie v České republice a v USA se významně neliší. Obě skupiny studentů si myslí, že psychoterapie má pozitivní hodnotu, identifikovali podobné zdroje svých přesvědčení – rodinu, přátele, osobní zkušenost a zájem, kulturu a média. Také pře-svědčení o rolích klienta a psychoterapeuta v psychoterapii jsou obdobná, stejně tak názory o přínosech psychoterapie a překážkách v jejím vyhledání, přestože se ve výpovědích objevují různě často. Rozdílné jsou postoje k tomu, zda by začínající studenti preferovali blízký (USA) nebo profesionální (Česká republika) vztah s psychoterapeutem. Byla identifikována také témata, která se vyskytovala pouze v původním či naopak pouze v současném výzkumu.

Abstract:

The aim of this research was to replicate the study of Hill at al. (2012) in the circumstances of the Czech Republic and to find out what are the attitudes of undergraduate students of psychology about psycho-therapy. The undergraduate student who never attended psychotherapy and who never attended any lecture about psychology at the university, were asked in semi-structured interview about their attitudes towards psychotherapy. These interviews were qualitatively (content analysis) and quantitatively analysed while the attachment of the participants was controlled (questionnaire ECR). The results of this research were compared with the results from Hill’s at al. (2012) study. The attitudes of undergraduate students of psy-chology in the Czech Republic and the USA are not significantly different. In both groups, the students think about psychotherapy as a positive value and identified similar sources of these attitudes – family, friends, personal experience and interest, culture and media. Also the attitudes about the client’s role in the psychotherapy and the psychotherapist’s role in the psychotherapy are similar, as well as the opinions about the benefits of the psychotherapy and the barriers to seeking it, even though they were mentioned variously. There exist the different opinions about close (USA) or professional (the Czech Republic) relationship between the client and the psychotherapist. The research identifies the topics specific for the Czech Republic and the USA.
