Fighting manipulated photography in the Czech online media environment

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou současné manipulace fotografií ve společen-ském diskurzu. Konkrétně se zaměřuje na to, jakou roli hrají fotografie v šíření dezin-formací v online mediálním prostředí a jak je tato manipulace fotografií vnímána společ-ností. Práce je založena na tezi, že čím více se zasahuje do fotografického obrazu a čím častěji jsou fotografie využívány pro dezinformační účely, tím více ztrácí svoji autentic-kou hodnotu. Za tohoto předpokladu budou dále zkoumána, jaká jsou v současné době možná řešení šíření těchto zmanipulovaných snímků. Důležitým prvkem v této oblasti jsou však digitální technologie. Média a jejich možnosti neustále transformují naše každodenní životy, a taktéž nás ovlivňují v digitál-ním prostoru, ve kterém se neustále nacházíme. Hlavním cílem práce je tedy za pomocí odborné literatury formulovat zásadní změny oproti dřívější praxi před digitalizací a po-ukázat na problematickou rovinu současné manipulace, a to v českém online prostředí. Práce stručně představí vznik, vývoj a historii manipulování fotografií, dále představí fotografickou manipulaci, dále autenticitu těchto snímků v kontextu českého mediálního prostoru a taktéž jejich šíření. Práce se zabývá i možnými řešeními šíření dezinformač-ních snímků v každodennosti a také jak je možné se v současnosti bránit proti zmanipu-lovaným snímkům, či minimálně se vyhnout důvěře v to, že je takový snímek obrazem reálného sdělení.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of contemporary manipulation of photographs in social discourse. Specifically, it focuses on the role that photographs play in the spread of misinformation in the online media environment and how this manipulation of photo-graphs is perceived by society. The work is based on the thesis that the more a photo-graphic image is interfered with and the more often photographs are used for disinforma-tion purposes, the more they lose their authentic value. Under this assumption, what are currently possible solutions to the spread of these manipulated images will be further investigated. However, digital technologies are an important element in this area. Media and its possibilities constantly transform our daily lives, and also influence us in the digital spa-ce in which we constantly find ourselves. The main goal of the work is to formulate fun-damental changes compared to the previous practice before digitalization with the help of professional literature and to point out the problematic level of current manipulation in the Czech online environment. The thesis will briefly present the origin, development and history of photo manipulation, and will also present photographic manipulation, as well as the authenticity of these images in the context of the Czech media space, as well as their dissemination. The work also deals with possible solutions to the spread of disin-formation images in everyday life, as well as how it is currently possible to defend aga-inst manipulated images, or at least to avoid trusting that such an image is an image of a real message.
