Evaluation of attitudes nursing students towards death

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo porovnat postoje studentů ošetřovatelství ke smrti. Dále pak zjistit rozdíly v postojích ke smrti dle typu studia, vlastní zkušeností se smrtí a vybraných sociodemografických charakteristik. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 120 studentů ošetřovatelství 1. a 3. ročníku studia. Dotazníkové šetření bylo realizováno (říjen-listopad 2021) standardizovaným dotazníkem Death Attitude Profile - Revised (Gesser, Reker, Wong, 1994). Výsledky: Šetřením bylo zjištěno, že studenti ošetřovatelství zaujímají vůči smrti převážně neutrální postoj a vnímají smrt jako přirozenou součást života. Největšího množství souhlasů dosáhla doména 3 neutrálního přijetí. Dále byl zjištěn rozdíl v postoji ke smrti u studentů se zkušeností se smrtí ve zdravotnickém zařízení, v doméně strach ze smrti a vyhýbání se smrti. V těchto doménách byly naměřeny vyšší hodnoty u studentů se zkušeností se smrtí ve zdravotnickém zařízení. Dále byl zaznamenán rozdíl u studentů s náboženským vyznáním v doméně neutrálního a přístupného přijetí, kdy byly naměřeny nejvyšší hodnoty. Závěr: Postoje studentů ošetřovatelství ke smrti jsou převážně neutrální a studenti považují smrt jako přirozenou součást života. Studenti s předchozí zkušeností se smrti ve zdravotnickém zařízení často vyjadřují strach ze smrti a smrti se vyhýbají. Studenti s náboženským vyznáním mají ke smrti přístupnější postoj než studenti bez náboženského vyznání.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of the diploma thesis was to compare the attitudes of nursing students to death. Furthermore, to find out the differences in attitudes to death according to the type of study, own experience with death and selected socio-demographic characteristic. Methodology: The research group consisted of 120 nursing students of the 1st and 3rd year of study. The questionnaire survey was conducted in (October - November 2021) using the standardized questionnaire Death Attitude Profile - Revised (Gesser, Reker, Wong, 1994). Results: The survey found that nursing students take a predominantly neutral attitude towards death and perceive death as a natural part of life. Domain 3 received neutral approvals. Furthermore, a difference in attitudes towards death was found in students who experienced death in a medical facility, in the domain of fear of death and avoidance of death. In these domains, higher values were measured for students with experience of death in a medical facility. Furthermore, a difference was noted for students with a religious belief in the domain of neutral and accessible reception, when highest values were measured. Conclusion: The attitudes of nursing students towards death are mostly neutral and students consider death as a natural part of life. Students with previous experience of death in a medical facility often express fear of death and avoid death. Students with a religious background have a more receptive attitude to death than students without a religion.
