Cosmological aspects in the work of Giordano Bruno

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá renesanční kosmologií italského filosofa Giordana Bruna, která je představena na základě analýzy jeho metafyzických dialogů. Zaměřuje se na hlavní zdroje Brunovy přírodní filosofie a jeho kritiku ptolemaiovsko-aristotelského modelu vesmíru. Pozornost je rovněž upřena na interpretaci Bruna jakožto vyznavače hermetické a magické renesanční tradice. Výsledkem podrobného zpracování dialogů je vyobrazení Brunova způsobu myšlení, jenž je klíčem pro objasnění ústřední role imaginace ve vědě. Podstatným vyústěním práce je taktéž významnost vztahu filosofie a vědy. Z praktického hlediska je užitečnost imaginativního myšlení ověřena na základě srovnání Brunových kosmologických aspektů s novodobými modely vesmíru.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with Renaissance cosmology of Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno, which is introduced on the basis of his metaphysical dialogue analysis. It aims at the main sources of Bruno´s natural philosophy as well as at his criticism of the Ptolemaic-Aristotelian model of the universe. It also focuses on Bruno´s interpretation as a follower of Renaissance hermetic and magic traditions. The result of a detailed processing of the dialogues is a presentation of Bruno´s way of thinking, which is a key for clarifying an essential role of imagination in science. A substantial output of the thesis is also a significant relation between philosophy and science. From the practical point of view, the usefulness of imaginative thinking is verified on the basis of a comparison of Bruno´s cosmological aspects with modern models of the universe.
