The life and work of Karel Babuljak in the context of contemporary Czech musical environment

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá osobností polyžánrového skladatele a multiinstrumentalisty Karla Babuljaka, primárně mapuje jeho hudební dílo. V první části stručně popisuje jeho život, jádrem je pak seznámení čtenáře s Babuljakovými skupinovými i individuálními hudebními projekty. Osobnost i tvorba muzikanta jsou vykresleny s návaznostmi a v souvislostech, od dětství až po současnost. Během svého života se muzikant věnoval velkému množství hudebních žánrů, od jazzu, blues a relaxační hudby po novou vlnu, reggae, hardcore country a další. Vedle pestrosti žánrů byl rovněž součástí velkého množství hudebních projektů, primárně kapel. V práci je nejvíce prostoru věnováno třem nejvýznamnějším uskupením, jichž byl součástí, experimentální etno kapele s duchovním přístupem k hudbě, Relaxaci, alternativní progresivní hudební skupině Mama Bubo a reggae kapele Babalet, která tento původně jamajský hudební styl v osmdesátých letech minulého století zpopularizovala v Československu. Práce zmiňuje i všechny ostatní zásadní hudební skupiny, které hudebník založil, i ty, jichž byl pouze dočasným členem, a popisuje jejich sestavy, hudební obsah, fungování, nahrávky a působiště. Nedílnou součástí je CD s ukázkami vybraných skladeb, příloha s diskografií, fotografiemi a plakáty, které korespondují s psaným projevem. Práce vychází primárně z osobního svědectví protagonisty doplněného odbornou literaturou a dobovými prameny (např. časopisy, plakáty), jako další zdroj informací jsou využita i svědectví vybraných Babuljakových hudebních spoluhráčů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the personality of the polygenre composer and multi-instrumentalist Karel Babuljak, primarily mapping his musical work. In the first part it briefly describes his life, and the core of it is to introduce the reader to Babuljak's both group and solo musical projects. The musician's work is portrayed coherently and in context, from his childhood to the present day. Throughout his life he has been involved in a multitude of musical genres, from jazz, blues and relaxation music to new wave, reggae, hardcore country and more. In addition to the variety of genres, he has also been part of a large number of musical projects, primarily bands. This thesis devotes most space to his three most important groups, the experimental ethno band with a spiritual approach to music, Relaxace, the alternative progressive music group Mama Bubo, and the reggae band Babalet, which popularized this originally Jamaican musical style in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. The work also mentions all the other significant musical groups that the musician founded, as well as those of which he was only a temporary member, and describes their line-ups, musical content, functioning, recordings and places of work. An integral part of the book is a CD with samples of selected songs, an appendix with discography, photographs and posters that match the written speech. The work is based primarily on the personal evidence of the protagonist, supplemented by specialized literature and original documents of the time (e.g. magazines, posters), an additional source of information are evidences of some of Babuljak's musical colleagues.
