Social determinants of suicides in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je zmapovat porevoluční vývoj sociálních determinant sebevražednosti v České republice. Práce je zasazena do kontextu teorie sociální integrace a regulace, kterou rozvinul Emil Durkheim ve svém díle Sebevražda. Autorka zde pomocí multivariační analýzy testuje data o sebevražednosti poskytnutá Ústavem zdravotnických informací a statistiky ČR. Tato data představují celkovou populaci zasebevražděných v letech 1990 až 2010, která pochází z formulářů „Hlášení o úmrtí.“ Jako referenční skupina slouží data z Výběrového šetření pracovních sil. Zkoumané nezávisle proměnné jsou pohlaví, věk, rodinný stav a vzdělání. Jejich vývoj ve sledovaném období je znázorněn a popsán jak z hlediska měr sebevražednosti jednotlivých kategorií, tak prostřednictvím binárních logistických modelů, které testují nastolené hypotézy a predikují šance jednotlivých kategorií na provedení sebevraždy. Hypotézy vychází jak z historického vývoje sebevražednosti na českém území, tak z novodobých výzkumů, které odkazují na Emila Durkheima a reformulují některé jeho teze.

Abstract:

The aim of this master's thesis is to address post-revolutionary development of social determinants of suicide in the Czech Republic. Thesis is set in the context of theory of integration and regulation, which was developed by Emil Durkheim in his work Suicide. Thesis author attempts to test the data provided by Insitute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic by multi-variational analysis of suicide. This data represents the overall population of people who died by suicide from the year 1990 to 2010 (incl.) and was collected through standard „Report of Death“ form. Data from Survey of Workforce is used as a reference group. Studied independent variables are sex, age, marital status and education. Development of these variables in considered period is represented and described both as rate of sucide in individual categories and as binary logistic models that test proposed hypothesis and predict chances of each category to commit suicide. Hypotheses are based both on historical development of suicide in the Czech Republic and on modern research that refers to Emil Durkheim and reformulates some of his theories.
