Autobiographical Narratives in the Works of Ota Pavel

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá autobiograficky laděnými povídkami Oty Pavla, které vyšly ve dvou sbírkách (Smrt krásných srnců, 1971 a Jak jsem potkal ryby, 1974). Text obsahuje interpretaci a analýzu obou sbírek, stejně jako popis okolností jejich vzniku a životopisný kontext autorova života. Předmětem zkoumání je dále specifický způsob jejich recepce a literárněvědného zpracování, a jeho příčiny. Oba tyto procesy byly ovlivněny vnějšími faktory: ideologickými omezeními komunistického režimu v Československu v době, kdy práce vyšly a byly několikrát znovu vydány, dále potom předčasným úmrtím autora, které způsobilo, že jeho knihy byly brzy po svém vzniku vydávány bez jeho kontroly. Autobiografičnost textů a jejich vydávání mimo kontext původních sbírek způsobily posuny ve vnímání významu děl. Práce se zabývá vznikem těchto posunů, jejich podobou a jejich dopadem na autorův literární odkaz.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the autobiography-based short stories of Ota Pavel, which were originally published in two volumes – Smrt krásných srnců (“Death of Beautiful Deer”, 1971) and Jak jsem potkal ryby (“How I Met Fish”, 1974). The text includes interpretation and analysis of each of the collections, as well as a description of the conditions in which the stories were written, and relevant information on the author’s life. The thesis is further concerned with the specific means of reception and critical treatment of the stories, and their underlying causes. Both of these processes were influenced by extraneous factors, mainly the ideological constrictions of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia at the time of the books’ first publication, and the premature death of the author, which deprived him of control over the books’ publication very soon after their conception. The autobiographical nature of the works and their frequent publication outside of the original collections’ context caused significant shifts in the perception of the texts’ meaning. The thesis is concerned with the inception of these shifts, their forms and their influence over the author’s literary legacy.
