Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zaměřuje na problematiku čtení v angličtině jako cizím jazyce u neslyšících vysokoškolských studentů. Téma bylo zkoumáno z pohledu toho, jak se jejich předchozí jazykové a čtenářské zkušenosti projevují ve čtení v cizím jazyce. Z tohoto hlediska byla zvažována specifická situace neslyšících, která zahrnuje znakový jazyk a mluvený jazyk majoritní společnosti. Čtení v angličtině jako cizím jazyce bylo dále zkoumáno z perspektivy procesu a to z hlediska čtenářských strategií, které studenti při čtení v angličtině využívají. Dále byl popsán názor studentů na explicitní výuku čtenářských strategií jako součást vyučování anglického jazyka. V teoretické části práce byly představeny oblasti ztráty sluchu, čtení, čtení neslyšících, čtení v druhém či cizím jazyce a koncept čtenářských strategií a jejich rozvoje. V rámci výzkumu bylo čtení chápáno z pohledu čtení s porozuměním, tedy procesu konstrukce významu textu. Čtení v cizím jazyce navazuje na čtení v prvním jazyce díky univerzálnosti mechanismů kognitivního zpracování. Specifické aspekty čtení v cizím jazyce vycházejí především z odlišných kontextů a cílů čtení a také z odlišnosti systému cílového jazyka. Koncept duálního zapojení jazyků při čtení v cizím jazyce je v rámci předkládané studie považován za užitečnou perspektivu pro uchopení toho, jak se první jazyk a zkušenosti čtení v prvním jazyce projevují při čtení v cizím jazyce. Čtenářské strategie jsou chápány jako zaměřené postupy aplikované čtenáři v rámci jejich snahy dekódovat text, rozumět slovům a konstruovat význam textu. Míra jejich vědomého užívání závisí na náročnosti textu a cíli čtení. Empirická část práce obsahuje důsledný popis výzkumné metodologie. V rámci studie byl využit kvalitativní přístup realizovaný skrze design kolektivní instrumentální případové studie. Účastníky výzkumu byli tři prelingválně neslyšící univerzitní studenti. Nástroje sběru dat zahrnovaly introspektivní metody, interview a terénní poznámky. Introspektivní metody se skládaly ze souběžného zaznamenávání (concurrent reporting), kdy byli účastníci požádáni o verbalizaci svých myšlenek a mentálních procesů během čtení v angličtině a retrospektivních interview, kdy účastníci popisovali své myšlení zpětně na základě protokolů zaznamenaných během čtení. U každého z účastníků proběhly interview, introspektivní zaznamenávání a retrospektivní interview dvakrát a to před začátkem a po skončení semestrální výuky angličtiny jako cizího jazyka, která zahrnovala také výuku a procvičování čtenářských strategií. Prezentace a diskuse výzkumných zjištění včetně jejich propojení s existujícím výzkumem představují hlavní část předkládané disertace. Zjištění se týkají oblastí raného jazykového vývoje a počátečních čtenářských zkušeností respondentů. V souvislosti s tím, jak účastníci určují svůj první jazyk, se zdá, že za nejvýznamnější považují hledisko jazyka využívaného jejich rodiči. Pro vyjádření zapojení dvou jazyků, češtiny a českého znakového jazyka, v rámci první zkušenosti čtení neslyšících studentů byl nabídnut koncept čtení v L(1+1) na místo čtení v L1. Dále bylo také navrženo, že trojí zapojení jazyků, ke kterému zřejmě dochází, když studenti čtou v angličtině, může být účelně uchopeno v rámci perspektivy mnohojazyčnosti. Další výzkumná zjištění zahrnují oblasti čtenářských postojů a chování účastníků. Pro všechny respondenty se čtení zdá být silně spojeno se školou a školními povinnostmi. ázáno s jejich obecnými postoji ke čtení formovanými na základě první čtenářské zkušenosti (výše zmíněné čtení v L(1+1)) než s jimi vyjadřovanou motivací k učení se angličtiny. Co se týká oblasti procesu čtení v angličtině jako cizím jazyce, výzkumná zjištění naznačují, že čtenářské strategie, které respondenti využívají odpovídají strategiím používaným úspěšnými neslyšícími čtenáři a čtenáři při čtení v cizím či druhém jazyce. Nicméně popsány byly také příklady neefektivního využívání strategií a procesů, které mohou být potenciální příčinou chyb v porozumění textu. Při výzkumu se neukázal výrazný vliv explicitní výuky čtenářských strategií na to, jak účastníci čtenářské strategie při čtení v angličtině využívají. Toto zjištění bylo vysvětleno především na základě malého rozsahu této výuky. Nicméně, respondenti hodnotili výuku jako přínosnou pro porozumění konkrétních textů v angličtině. Disertační práce je zakončena shrnutím výsledků výzkumu zvážených také z pohledu limitací výzkumu. Na jejich základě byly dále navrženy jejich pedagogické implikace a možnosti dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

The present doctoral thesis has focused on the issue of the reading in English as a foreign language (EFL) of deaf university students. The topic was studied from the point of view of how their previous language and reading experiences are pronounced in reading in a foreign language. In this respect the specific situation of deaf learners, which involves sign language and the majority spoken language, was considered. The reading in EFL was further investigated from the point of view of the process, when the students’ usage of reading strategies was described. Finally, students’ views on EFL instruction which involved explicit reading strategy training were discussed. In the theoretical part, the areas of deafness, reading, reading of deaf persons, reading in a foreign language (reading in L2) and the concept of reading strategies and their development were introduced. In the study, reading was approached from the point of view reading comprehension, i.e. the process of construction of the text meaning(s). Reading in L2 draws upon reading in first language based on the universal character of cognitive processing mechanisms; its specific features derive from the varied contexts and purposes of reading and also from the target language system. In the study, the concept of dual language involvement in reading in L2 was considered a useful perspective for approaching the influence of first language and first language reading experience on the L2 reading process. Reading strategies were understood as focused steps applied by readers in their effort to decode the text, understand the words and build the meaning of the text, the degree of the conscious use of which is relative to the of difficulty of the text and the purpose of reading. The empirical part of the thesis encompassed a thorough description of the research methodology. In the study, qualitative approach was adopted and realized through a collective instrumental case study design. The research participants were three prelingually deaf university students. The instruments of data collection included introspective measures, interviews and field notes. The introspective measures comprised concurrent reporting, when participants were asked to verbalize their thoughts and mental processes while performing reading tasks, and retrospective interviews, where the participants’ reviewed their thinking using the concurrent report protocols as prompts. Each of the participants was interviewed and performed the introspective reporting twice; before the start and after the end of a semester-long EFL course, which involved explicit reading strategy training. The presentation and discussion of research findings, including their relating to the existing research, form the central part of the thesis. The findings involve the areas of the participants’ early language and initial reading experiences. As far as how the participants determine their first language, they seem to view the language of their parents as the most significant factor. To deal with the involvement of two languages, Czech language and Czech sign language, in the participants’ first language reading experience, the concept of reading in L(1+1) instead of reading in L1 was proposed. Furthermore, it was suggested that the triple language involvement which seemed to come to place when the participants read in EFL could be approached through the perspective of multilingualism. Further research findings cover the areas of the participants’ reading attitudes and behaviours. For all participants, reading in general appeared to be strongly connected with school requirements. Their behaviours related to reading in EFL seemed to be influenced more strongly by their general attitudes to reading formed based on the first reading experience, rather than by their expressed motivation to learn English. respond to those of skilled deaf readers and L2 readers. Nonetheless, some ineffective use of strategies and processes which might be the potential causes of flaws in reading comprehension were also described. The explicit instruction of reading strategies did not seem to have a significant impact on the participants’ use of reading strategies when reading in English. This was explained from the perspective of the limited extent of the instruction. Nevertheless, the participants evaluated it as an instrument beneficial for their understanding of particular texts in English. The thesis is concluded with a summary of research findings viewed also in connection with the research limitations. Drawing on these, pedagogical implications as well as ideas for further research are proposed.
