Coverage of Czech National Holidays on News of Czech Television and Prima TV

Abstract:

Předmětem této práce jsou české státní svátky a jejich obraz v českém televizním zpravodajství. Konkrétně se zabývá zpravodajstvím České televize a televize Prima z let 2005, 2006 a 2007. Cílem je zmapovat, jakým způsobem jsou české státní svátky v televizním zpravodajství reflektovány a rozdíl v přístupu k jejich pokrytí mezi vysílatelem veřejné služby a komerční televizí. Státní svátky jsou přitom vnímány jako implicitní součást širších konceptů národa a národní identity. Metodologickými východisky této práce jsou kvantitativní obsahová analýza a narativní analýza. Na základě obsahové analýzy se podařilo identifikovat některé rozdíly v přístupu ke státním svátkům ze strany jednotlivých vysílatelů. Obecně přikládá Česká televize státním svátkům větší význam než Prima. Zároveň však některé z indikátorů naznačují určitou míru standardizace obrazu státních svátků, a to jak při porovnávání jednotlivých let, tak při vzájemném srovnání obou televizí. Tato otázka je podrobněji zkoumána v rámci narativní analýzy, která je postavena na prvcích zpravodajské narace, jak o nich hovoří John Hartley.

Abstract:

The subjects of this thesis are Czech national holidays and their coverage on Czech TV news. It focuses on news of Czech Television and Prima TV from the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. The aim is to describe the way in which Czech national holidays are covered on Czech TV news and the difference of their coverage between the public service broadcaster and commercial television. National holidays are perceived as the component of broader concepts of nation and national identity. This thesis works with the methodology of quantitative content analysis and narrative analysis. The content analysis identified some differences in the approach of the two broadcasters. In general, Czech Television pays more attention to national holidays than Prima TV. At the same time, some of the indicators suggest some standardization of the image of national holidays, both in comparison of the years, as well as the televisions. This question is discussed in more detail as apart of the narrative analysis.
