Dynamics of Norway spruce dieback in the context of water availability in the landscape of Bohemian Switzerland

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou dynamiky odumírání smrkových porostů v NP České Švýcarsko a CHKO Labské pískovce v důsledku kůrovcové kalamity v roce 2018. V rešerši je věnována pozornost teoretickému základu DPZ, biologii a ekologii kůrovce (Ips typographus) a smrku (Picea abies) a dále aplikaci metod DPZ v ČR a v zahraničí. V praktické části práce byla provedena analýza zdravotního stavu smrkových porostů v zájmové oblasti na základě dynamiky změn vegetačního indexu (NDVI) nad daty Sentinel-2 mezi roky 2016-2021. Na základě literární rešerše byl stanoven práh poklesu NDVI hodnotou 0,1, která udávala významný pokles mezi roky, a absolutní práh NDVI hodnotou 0,7 v konkrétním roce. Tyto hodnoty sloužily jako rozhraní mezi živým a mrtvým smrkovým porostem. Z hlediska posouzení role dostupnosti vody v odolnosti smrku vůči hmyzímu škůdci byly NP a CHKO rozděleny do několika zón na úrovni smrkových porostů, a to na 10 m obal kolem vodních toků a zóny mokřadních biotopů na základě dostupného Mapování biotopů. Na základě těchto zón byly tvořeny výsledky (NDVI) pro obě území, včetně kumulativního rozdílu mortality (hraniční hodnota NDVI 0,1), kumulativní mortality (hodnota NDVI 0,7) a absolutní mortality (hodnota NDVI 0,7). Trendy za celé území NP jsou odlišné od dynamiky u mokřadů a vodních toků, přičemž rozdíly jsou velmi malé. Z výsledků v CHKO vyplývá, že kůrovcová kalamita zde začala později, až v roce 2020, a byla celkově méně výrazná než v NP, přičemž dostupnost vody zde hrála větší roli. Z celkových výsledků pro NP, tak i CHKO se tedy nedá úplně určit, jestli zóny podmáčených lokalit (mokřady) mají vliv na průběh kůrovcové kalamity. Co se týče smrkových porostů kolem vodních toků, výsledky naznačují rezistentnější průběh.

Abstract:

The Bachelor Thesis deals with the issue of dynamics of spruce forest dieback in Bohemian Switzerland National Park (NP) and Elbe Sandstone Protected Landscape Area (PLA) due to bark beetle calamity in 2018. The first part of the research is the theoretical basics of remote sensing, biology, and ecology of the bark beetle (Ips typographus) and spruce (Picea abies), and application of remote sensing methods in the Czech Republic and worldwide. In the practical section of the Theses, the analysis of the health status of spruce stands in the area of interest was carried out based on the dynamics of changes in the Normalized Difference Vegetation index (NDVI) above the Sentinel-2 data between 2016-2021. In the basis of existing literature, the threshold of a decrease in NDVI was determined by a value of 0.1, which reported a significant decline between the years, and the absolute threshold of the NDVI value of 0.7 in a particular year. These values served as a borderline between living and dead spruce stands. In terms of assessing the role of water availability in the resistance of spruce to insect pests, the NP and PLA were divided into several zones at the level of spruce stands, specifically into 10-meter water buffer and wetland habitats based on available habitat mapping. Based on these zones, the results (NDVI) were prepared for both areas, including the cumulative difference mortality (threshold NDVI value 0.1), cumulative mortality (NDVI value 0.7), and absolute mortality (NDVI value 0.7). Trends for the whole area of NP are different from the dynamics of wetlands and watercourses, with the differences being marginal. From the results for PLA, it can be concluded that the bark beetle calamity started later, in 2020, and was overall less pronounced compared to the NP, with water availability playing a stronger role here. Overall, it cannot be completely determined whether the zones of waterlogged sites (wetlands) affect the bark beetle outbreak. Regarding spruce forests around watercourses, the results indicate a more resistant course.
