Non-Finite Embedded Clauses in Portuguese

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo popsat problematiku použití infinitivu ve vedlejších větách v současné evropské portugalštině. Infinitivní vedlejší věty představují významnou alternativu k finitivním vedlejším větám, v nichž se vyskytuje sloveso v modu indikativu či konjunktivu. Infinitiv je slovy Erharta (2001) slovesné jméno, které je nástrojem kondenzace dvou logických vět v jedno souvětí, v rámci něhož se predikát vedlejší věty mění v závislý člen hlavní věty. Závislý člen v podobě infinitivu postrádá morfémy způsobu, času a osoby a interpetaci těchto gramatických kategorií získává v rámci syntaktického celku propozice. Portugalština, jakožto románský jazyk, této možnosti syntaktické kondenzace využívá v hojné míře, infinitivní věty jsou ekonomičtější než finitivní, což je pro mluvčí často rozhodující kritérium. Ne vždy je ale zkrácení prostřednictvím infinitivní věty tou preferovanou možností, dílem z důvodů obecně syntaktických, dílem kvůli komunikačnímu záměru mluvčího, neboť finitivní slovesný tvar může představovat prostředek stylistického zdůraznění, např. tím, že je použit modus konjunktivu. Specifičnost portugalštiny spočívá v tom, že si infinitiv může ponechat v určitých případech flexi, která se projevuje přítomností morfému gramatické osoby a čísla u druhé osoby singuláru a všech osob plurálu. Flektivní infinitiv, jak se tento fenomén nazývá, bývá často chybně zaměňován za osobní infinitiv. U definice osobního infinitivu se setkáváme s různými pohledy. My se přikláníme k nejčastěji přijímanému pojetí, podle kterého osobní infinitiv vyjadřuje děj, u kterého je znám původce děje, případně vyjadřuje vlastnost či stav, u nichž známe nositele. Nejčastěji se tak děje právě prostřednictvím flektivního infinitivu, nicméně jsou i jiné syntaktické prostředky, které umožňují jasnou interpretaci podmětu vedlejší věty bez přítomnosti infinitivní flexe: explicitně vyjádřený podmět substantivem či zájmenem a proces kontroly podmětu či předmětu. Hlavní funkcí flektivního infinitivu ve vedlejších větách je umožnit kondenzaci infinitivní věty v co největším možném rozsahu, neboli zajistit jasnou interpretaci podmětu infinitivní věty všude tam, kde by v důsledku použití neosobního infinitivu mohla nastat nejednoznačná interpretace podmětu infinitivní věty. Flektivní infinitiv je syntakticky opodstatněný i v těch souvětích, kde je sloveso v infinitivu vzdáleno od finitivního tvaru slovesa věty řídící a dochází k jakési aktualizaci podmětu vedlejší věty. To je způsobeno buďto tím, že je predikát řídící věty složen z kopulativního slovesa a adjektiva/substantiva, nebo tím, že je antecedent sám v infinitivu − v důsledku spojení s modálním či pomocným slovesem. Jistou roli, i když nepochybně menší, má slovosled věty vedlejší, který závisí na typu konstituentu věty řídící, který je infinitivní větou rozvit. Další významnou funkcí flektivního infinitivu je stylistické zdůraznění obsahu vedlejší věty. Komunikativním záměrem mluvčího může být působit tímto způsobem na příjemce sdělení. V tomto kontextu může i použití neflektivního infinitivu být prostředkem pro naplnění stejného záměru. V naší studii jsme se věnovali všem druhům vedlejších vět, v nichž se v portugalštině používá infinitiv, popsali jsme jejich vnitřní strukturu a syntaktické procesy a konstrukce, které jsou mnohdy v kontextu románských jazyků ojedinělé. Následně jsme pomocí nástrojů korpusové lingvistiky tyto poznatky ověřili a kde to bylo možné i kvantifikovali. obu vedlejší věty může mít vliv celá řada faktorů: zda je slovesný antecedent tranzitivní povahy, zda je predikát věty řídící rozvit kvalitativním indikátorem, jakou má predikát vedlejší věty schopnost subkategorizace a interpretace podmětu vedlejší věty, zda vedlejší věta představuje otázku a jakého typu apod. Celkem jsme vyhledali a podle volby typu vedlejších vět zařadili 51 antecedentů kompletivních vět, 5 jmenných antecedentů vztažných vět, 34 konektorů adverbiálních vět a 10 výrazů volících účinkové věty. Ve většině případů je preference finitivní/infinitivní vedlejší věty zjevná, výsledky jsou přehledně představeny a setříděny v příloze této práce. U výrazů, kde byl nalezen dostatečný počet výskytů infinitivních vět, byla kvantifikována i frekvence výskytu flektivního infinitivu vzhledem ke všem nalezeným infinitivním větám. Obecně lze konstatovat, že u adverbiálních vět je výskyt flektivních tvarů infinitivu daleko pravidelnější než u kompletivních vět.

Abstract:

The aim of the presented dissertation is to describe the use of the infinitive in embedded clauses in contemporary European Portuguese as an alternative to finite embedded clauses. The infinitive is, according to Erhart (2001), a verb noun representing a manner how to condensate two logical clauses into one sentence where the predicative of the embedded clause converts into a dependent constituent of an element of the main sentence. The dependent constituent in the infinite form lacks completely inflectional morphology and its clausal interpretation is acquired from the context of the proposition in question. Portuguese, as a Romance language, uses in great extend this possibility of syntactic condensation as the infinite clauses are more economical than the finite ones which might be an important reason for the selection of those. Nevertheless, not always may shorter construction be a preferred option, partly due to purely syntactic reasons, partly because of the communicative intention of the speaker (for example the subjunctive mode of finite verbs can become a source of stylistic emphasis). The specificity of the Portuguese language lies in the fact that the infinitive may retain certain morphological parameters manifested by the presence of grammatical morpheme of the 2nd person singular and all persons plural. This phenomenon, so called inflected infinitive, is often erroneously confused with so called personal infinitive. There are various definitions for the personal infinitive. We have taken over the generally adopted assumption that the personal infinitive expresses actions or states where originator (subject) is known. This is possible often by the means of the inflection infinitive but there are also other syntactic means where no inflection is necessary: an explicitly expressed subject and syntactic processes of, so called, control of subject and control of object. They all allow a clear interpretation of the embedded clause subject. The main function of the inflection infinitive is to arrange a clear interpretation of the infinite clause, where a use of simple infinitive could result in ambiguous interpretations of the subject of infinitive clause. The use of inflected infinitive is syntactically justified even in cases where the infinitive has certain distance from the finite verb of the main sentence within the lineal structure: where the antecedent of the infinite clause consists of a predicate adjective or predicate nominative, eventually where the main clause verb has a form of infinitive accompanied by a modal or auxiliary verb. The word order of the embedded clause plays also a certain role but smaller than the previously mentioned reasons. Another important function of the inflection infinitive (but also of the simple infinitive) is to emphasize stylistically the content of a clause with the intent to involve the counterpart somehow. We have focused in our survey on all kinds of embedded clauses, where the infinitive is used, we have described their internal structure and syntactic processes which impact them and which might have no parallel among the remaining Romance languages. By the tools of the corpus linguistics we have verified the theoretical findings and quantified them where possible. A particular emphasis has been placed on so called completive sentences which replace one argument of lexical nucleus of the main clause. The fact whether a clause is preferably infinite or finite can be caused by several reasons: the transitivity/intransitivity of the antecedent, the presence of qualitative indicators binded to the antecedent of an adjectival or nominal nature, the general ability of subcategorization and interpretation of the embedded clause subject, etc. Altogether 51 antecedents of completive clauses, 5 nominal antecedents of relative sentences, 34 connectors of adverbial phrases and 10 expressions opting effect sentences have been investigated and classified in the dissertation. a clear preference for finite / infinitive clauses has been attested. Where possible, we have quantified as well a frequency of inflection infinitive forms according to the type of infinite clauses. Generally it can be concluded that the incidence of the inflected infinitive is higher in the adverbial phrases rather than in comletive sentences. The obtained results are clearly presented and sorted in the appendix to this dissertation.
