Complexity measures for EEG Analysis

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnujeme analýze EEG signálu, konkrétně aplikacím vybraných měr složitosti na tyto signály, za účelem zjištění zda-li by nám mohly posloužit jako účinný nástroj při diagnóze Alzheimerovy choroby. V první části je vysvětlena podstata, průběh a diagnóza Alzheimerovy choroby a jsou zde předloženy důvody proč je brzká a nenákladná diagnóza důležitá a proč by nám EEG takovou diagnózu mohlo poskytnout. V další části se zabýváme vznikem a šířením elektrického potenciálu v mozku a jeho snímáním pomocí metody elektroencefalografie. Jsou zde také vysvětleny evokované potenciály jakožto reakce nervové soustavy na určité podněty. Dále jsou představeny a definovány všechny míry složitosti, které byly na signál použity. Praktická část se zabývá vyhodnocením a vzájemným porovnáním jednotlivých měr složitostí spočítaných na evokovaných potenciálech skupiny devíti pacientů postižených Alzheimerovou chorobou a skupiny devíti kontrolních jedinců. Elektrody, kde byl nalezen statisticky významný rozdíl hodnot vypočítaných měr složitosti mezi dvěma skupinami, jsou podrobeny další analýze a je spočítána jejich schopnost správné diskriminace mezi těmito skupinami.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze EEG signals, specifically to apply several complexity measures to these signals in terms of ability to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Initially, the principle, progress and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease are explained. Furthermore, the reasons an early and low cost diagnosis is important are discussed, introducing EEG as a promising tool to provide such a diagnosis. Continuing, with a review of formation and spread of electric potential in the brain and a scan of these processes obtained through the method of electroencephalography. Evoked potentials as reactions of the neural system to certain stimuli are also explained in this section. Hereafter, all complexity measures used on the signal are introduced and defined.Concluding with an evaluation and comparison of all the complexity measures c omputed on evoked potentials, taken from nine Alzheimer’s disease patients and nine control subjects. The electrodes with statistically significant differences of the values of complexity measures between the groups are further analyzed and their ability to discriminate between the two groups is calculated.
