Structural Changes and Evolution of the Middle Class in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem strukturálních změn a vývoje střední třídy v regionu subsaharské Afriky. Pomocí klastrové analýzy byly identifikovány skupiny (klastry) dohromady 8 zemí, jež vykazují podobné rysy z hlediska strukturálního vývoje. Následně byly směr a podoba strukturální transformace zkoumány v každém jednotlivém klastru ve vztahu ke změnám ve vývoji střední třídy. Střední třída v klastru 1 (Nigérie a Ghana), v jehož centru hospodářství stojí těžební sektor, si vedla srovnatelně s klastry 2 (Mauricius, JAR) a 3 (Keňa, Senegal), jejichž strukturální vývoj byl hodnocen jako nejvíce optimální z teoretického hlediska. Ekonomiky zemí v klastru 4 (Tanzanie, Malawi) jsou založené převážně na zemědělství a velikost střední třídy zde v porovnání se zbylými klastry značně zaostávala. V závěrečné části se práce věnovala případové studii Ghany. K dotvoření obrazu vysvětlujícího vzájemný vztah mezi oběma zkoumanými tématy byly analyzovány determinanty střední třídy v této zemi, konkrétně ekonomická úroveň, vzdělání a etnická fragmentace. Protože, na rozdíl od Nigérie zařazené do stejného klastru, si střední třída v Ghaně vedla relativně úspěšně, lze se domnívat, že k takovému vývoji přispěly rovněž institucionální faktory, vedle ekonomických, mezi něž řadíme právě strukturální změny.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis examines two intertwined topics: structural changes and the evolution of middle class in sub-Saharan Africa. The conducted cluster analysis enabled us to identify groups (clusters) of 8 countries in total, which exhibit similarities in patterns of structural changes. Afterwards, the interconnection between structural transformation and changes in the middle class size of each cluster was investigated. The middle classes in cluster 1 (Nigeria and Ghana), where the mainstay of the economy is the mining sector, were comparable to middle classes in clusters 2 (Mauritius, South Africa) and 3 (Kenya, Senegal), whose structure of economy was perceived as rather positive, taking the theoretical approach. Cluster 4 (Tanzania, Malawi), consists of countries, whose economies are largely based on agriculture. A wide gap between the middle class size in this cluster, and the remaining, was found. The final part of the thesis focused on a case study of Ghana. With the aim of providing deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between the two examined topics (that is, structural changes and the middle class), we have examined determinants of the middle class evolution in Ghana, particularly: the level of development, education, and ethnic fragmentation. Ghanaian middle class enjoyed a fairly auspicious development in terms of the middle class size compared to Nigeria, which was grouped into the same cluster as Ghana. This might infer that next to structural changes, or broadly speaking, economic factors, there were also institutions coming into play, which have contributed to the middle class growth in Ghana.
