Analytical methods in psycholinguistic metaphor perception research

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá metaforickým vyjádřením a jeho zpracováním v mozku skrze psycholingvistické pojetí analýzy řeči. Součástí práce je explorační studie analytických nástrojů umožňující lépe pochopit podvědomé zpracovávání lexikálních jednotek a kolokací v lidském mozku, lexikálním primingem specifických slov, neurálním mapováním a zapojením krátkodobé paměti v percepci tzv. konceptuálních (kognitivních) metafor v rámci CMT (teorie konceptuálních metafor). Výsledky analýzy metod jsou v opozici k tradičnímu pojetí metafory, jako básnické figury v rámci západní literární teorie WMT (western metaphor theory). Psycholingvistický přístup poskytuje řadu analytických nástrojů díky svému zaměření a práci s konkrétními subjekty užívající jazyk, jejich percepční, kognitivní schopností a jazykovou inteligencí, které jsou klíčovými aspekty zkoumání výzkumné studie diplomové práce. Výzkum se postupně z nezávislého projektu v roce 2014 postupně rozšířil v hustotě výzkumného vzorku, který je možné analyzovat skrze kvantitativní statistické metody. Data byla nasbírána respondenty z českých i zahraničních univerzit, jejichž studenti se podrobili kognitivnímu psycholingvistickému testu. Analytické metody podporují vnitřní validitu a reliabilitu výzkumu. Celkem bylo nasbíráno 500 kognitivních testů, které byly analyzovány statistickými metodami pro nalezení vztahů mezi lexikálními jednotkami a slovními spojeními, které testoval psycholingvistický test.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis attends to metaphorical expressions and their brain processing described from psycholinguistic perspective. The thesis includes exploration study of analytical tools which may help understand the unaware lexical items connections in human brain, possible primed words, neural mappings and short-term memory involvement in the perception of the so called conceptual metaphor theory (CMT). The results of analysis are in opposition to the traditional western metaphor theory (WMT). Psycholinguistic approach provides a variety of tools for analysis due to the direct contact with active users of languages, their perception, cognitive skills and language intelligence which should be the core aspects of a data-based research. The research started in 2014 as an independent project and has gradually increased its data sample which can be interpreted by a quantitative statistical analysis. The data are collected by the psycholinguistic cognitive test done at several universities in Czech Republic and abroad; Analytical analysis supports the validity and reliability of the research. Totally, 500 memory tests were then statistically analysed for finding any correlations between the lexical items projected during the psycholinguistic test.
