Symbolic Data Analysis as a Means of Enhancing Consumer Privacy in Smart Metering

Abstract:

Různorodost a dynamika inteligentních energetických sítí přináší nové výzvy a vyžaduje kompletní přepracování tradičních přístupů. Potřeba stálého a podrobného monitorování sítě podmínila také rozvoj v oblasti inteligentních měřičů spotřeby s možností automatického odpočtu. Tyto inteligentní měřiče postupně nahradí klasické elektroměry, vodoměry nebo plynoměry, a budou poskytovat detailní informace o spotřebitelích a stavu zařízení připojených do sítě. S pomocí těchto informací se inteligentní síť může neustále adaptovat a optimalizovat. Tím, že spotřebitelé dostanou k dispozici podrobné údaje o své spotřebě, se také mohou snížit jejich výdaje za energie. Na druhou stranu, možnost shromažďovat a analyzovat velké objemy naměřených dat může mít negativní dopad na soukromí spotřebitelů. Naměřené údaje a informace z nich odvozené mohou odhalit citlivé podrobnosti ze života domácností a jejich obyvatelů, které lze následně zneužít. Z tohoto důvodu jsou potřeba techniky pro sběr, agregaci, ukládání a zpracování dat, které budou brát v potaz soukromí spotřebitelů. Byla navržena řada takových technik. V této práci načrtneme výzkumný záměr, který jako hlavní nosič informace při odpočtech z inteligentních měřičů uvažuje symbolická data. Symbolické veličiny ve srovnání s klasickými bodovými veličinami nabývají komplexnější hodnoty, jako například intervaly nebo funkce. V důsledku toho jsou schopny dobře sumarizovat hlavní rysy datového souboru, přičemž ale abstrahují od jednotlivých detailů. Toto považujeme za hlavní výhodu symbolických dat ve srovnání s klasickými daty a navrhujeme jejich využití pro účely monitorování inteligentních sítí. Hlavním očekávaným výstupem našeho výzkumu bude soubor protokolů pro odpočet měření v inteligentní síti, jež zachovávají soukromí spotřebitelů pomocí symbolických dat.

Abstract:

The dynamic and heterogeneous nature of the smart grid poses a new set of challenges and calls for a redesign of the traditional approaches from the ground up. The need for continuous and detailed monitoring of the grid has also motivated the development of the domain of smart metering. The so-called smart meters aim to replace the traditional electricity, water or gas consumption meters, and provide more detailed information about the consumer and the state of the devices connected to the grid. Using this information, the grid can be constantly adapted and its overall performance optimized. Giving the consumers access to the detailed information about their consumption can also help them reduce the expenses. On the other hand, this ability to collect and analyse large amounts of fine-grained measurements gives rise to significant privacy concerns. The measurements and the information derived from them can reveal sensitive details about a household and the behaviour patterns of its inhabitants, which could then be exploited for malicious purposes. For this reason, there is a need for the collection, aggregation, storage and processing techniques that would take into consideration consumer privacy. Numerous privacy-enhancing techniques have been suggested for smart metering. In this thesis proposal, we outline a research direction that adopts the symbolic data as the main carrier of information and a privacy-preserving technique at the same time. Compared to classic point-valued variables, symbolic variables adopt more complex values such as intervals or functions. As a result, they can effectively summarize the main characteristics of a set of values and at the same time abstract from the individual details. We consider this a significant advantage of the symbolic data over the classical data and advocate their use for the purposes of smart metering. The main expected outcome of our proposed research will be a suite of protocols for privacy-preserving smart metering using symbolic data.
