Redox conditions in pyrite biooxidation

Abstract:

This thesis deals with bacterial oxidation of pyrite, namely monitoring developments of redox potential and the relative expression of genes sensitive to changes in the redox potential. From the experimentally observed results, it was found that values of the redox potential during the biooxidation of pyrite remain constant. The expected reason is the complexation of ferric ions with a reactant in the solution. This finding may be useful for better understanding of the mechanism of pyrite biooxidation. The fall in redox potential and the increase in concentration of Fe2+ had increasing effect on the relative gene expression. This result should be confirmed by repeating the experiment.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá bakteriálnou oxidáciou pyritu, konkrétne sledovaním vývoja redoxného potenciálu a relatívnej expresie génov citlivých na zmeny redoxného potenciálu. Z experimentálne zistených výsledkov sa zistilo, že priebeh redoxného potenciálu je počas biooxidácie pyritu konštantný. Predpokladaným dôvodom je komplexácia železitých iónov s reaktantami v roztoku. Toto zistenie môže byť prínosné k lepšiemu pochopeniu mechanizmu biooxidácie pyritu. Pokles redoxného potenciálu a nárast koncentrácie Fe2+ mal za následok zvýšenie relatívnej expresie génov. Tento výsledok je ale nutné potvrdiť opakovaním pokusu.
