Everyday life and subversion among the young fans of metal music

Abstract:

The main topic of the diploma thesis is its own, qualitative sociological inquiry into the community of fans of metal music, exploring the central theme of non-conformity and its link to the everyday life of these fans. The basis of the thesis lies in the argument that defiance towards the dominant order stands as a central meaning within the field of metal music. Therefore, the thesis seeks to understand how do these meaning permeate into the everyday lives of the fans. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first, theoretical one, offers an overview of approaches to the sociological aspects of music scenes used to this day, as well as an overview of texts that have analyzed metal as a social phenomenon (such as the work of Weinstein). Overall, the theoretical part of the thesis is based on two theories – the first one being Maffesoli's theory of social groups as "neo-tribes". This theory explains the meanings inside social groups with the notion of temporary, strong, and immediate ties. This theoretical approach is confronted with a sociology of the everyday developed by de Certeau and Lefebvre, which pictures the everyday life as potentially defiant to the dominant order. Consequently, in the second part, the thesis puts forth an analysis of five qualitative interviews with fans. It manages to uncover the dynamic between a strong rebellious potential and an emphasis on freedom and a strong personal individuality. Then, while fans realize their conflictual stance towards social norms, they also see themselves as strong and free individuals. With regards to its findings, this thesis percieves non-conformity as a inseparable part of the metal scene, and as an individual choice of the fans themselves.

Abstract:

Hlavnou témou diplomovej práce je vlastný, kvalitatívny sociologický výskum komunity fanúšikov metalovej hudby so zameraním na otázku non-konformity a jej vzťahu ku každodennosti metalových fanúšikov. Práca argumentuje, že vzdor voči dominantnému poriadku predstavuje jednu zo základných tém na poli metalovej hudby. Zaujíma sa preto, akým spôsobom prenikajú tieto významy do každodenného života jeho fanúšikov. Práca je rozdelená na dve hlavné časti. Prvá, zameraná na teóriu, ponúka prehľad doterajších prístupov k sociologickým aspektom hudobných scén, ako aj o prehľad sociologických textov, ktoré analyzovali metal ako spoločenskému fenoménu (ako napríklad text of Weinstein). Celkovo sa teoretická časť opiera o dve teórie – tou prvou je teória sociálnych skupín ako tzv. "kmeňov" (resp. Neo-tribes). Tá vykresľuje význam sociálnych skupín a vzťahov v nich najmä pomocou krátkodobých, silných a bezprostredných väzieb. Tento teoretický prístup je konfrontovaný so sociológiou každodennosti, ktorú rozpracovali de Certeau či Lefebvre ako potenciálne vzdorujúcu dominantnému poriadku.Následne, v druhej časti, predkladá práca analýzu piatich kvalitatívnych rozhovorov s fanúšikmi. Odhaľuje tak dynamiku medzi silným rebelským potenciálom a dôrazom na slobodu a individualitu jedinca. Zatiaľ, čo si teda fanúšikovia uvedomujú konfliktné postoje ku spoločenským normám, vnímajú aj seba ako silnú a slobodnú individualitu. Na základe zistení vníma diplomová práca non-konformitu ako súčasť nielen metalovej scény, a ako individuálnu voľbu fanúšikov.
