Why Yahweh, and not Aten? Factors in the Historical Success of the Israelite Monotheism Compared with the Failure of Akhenaten's Religious Reform

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá judským náboženstvím perské doby v komparaci s amarnským náboženstvím. Cílem práce je zjištění důvodů, proč amarnské náboženství, proklamující jediného boha Atona, nebylo úspěšné a po smrti jeho tvůrce faraona Achnatona se Egypt vrátil k tradičnímu polyteistickému náboženství, a proč judské náboženství, proklamující jediného boha Jahva, naopak úspěšné bylo a po dalším vývoji se z něj stalo jedno z monoteistických náboženství. Práce je analogickou komparací obou náboženských systémů s důrazem na exkluzivně monoteistické prvky, elitu prosazující náboženství do společnosti, mocensko-politické mechanismy prosazování a na opozici vůči prosazování monoteismu. Práce je založena na písemných i materiálních pramenech z obou avizovaných náboženství. Nezbytné je také vlastní vymezení monoteismu, jež je v práci použito.

Abstract:

The Master’s Thesis is concerned with Judean religion of the Persian period in comparison with Amarna religion. The purpose of the work is finding out reasons, why Amarna religion, proclaiming one God Aten, was unsuccessful, and after the death of its creator pharaoh Akhenaten, Egypt returned to the traditional polytheistic religion, and why Judean religion, proclaiming one God Yahweh, was successful and after further developments, it became one of the monotheistic religions. The work is analogous comparison of both religious systems with an emphasis on exclusively monotheistic elements, elite promoting the religion to society, power-political mechanisms for promotion and opposition to the promotion of monotheism. The work is based on written and unwritten sources from both advised religions. It is also necessary to define monotheism itself, as it is used in the thesis.
