Adult Children of Alcoholics in Their Own Wiew

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce jsou dospělé děti alkoholiků, zejména jimi popisované prožívání alkoholismu rodiče v dětství a způsoby zvládání této situace. Zkoumám také subjektivně vnímané následky alkoholismu rodiče pro jejich pozdější život. Jedná se o kvalitativní studii, jako metoda sběru dat byly použity polostrukturované rozhovory. V teoretické části práce jsou zmíněny koncepty sebepojetí, sebehodnocení a copingu ve vztahu ke sledované tématice a systémová teorie rodiny. Podrobně je zpracováno téma alkoholismu a rodiny se zvláštním zaměřením na následky pro děti. Součástí teoretické části je i přehled výzkumů dětí alkoholiků v ČR a v zahraničí a nástin problematiky týkající se dospělých dětí alkoholiků. V analytické části je na základě dat získaných v rozhovorech s 5 dospělými dětmi alkoholiků věnován prostor prožívání dětství s rodičem alkoholikem, způsobům řešení této situace a strategiím jejího zvládání. V neposlední řadě jsou zkoumány subjektivně vnímané následky alkoholismu rodiče pro pozdější život a vliv na sebepojetí respondentů.

Abstract:

This study addresses the subject of adult children of alcoholics, focusing on their subjective perception of the experience growing up in a family with an alcoholic parent, and on strategies of coping with these facts. I also examine the effects of parental alcoholism on their further life in particular. The study is based on qualitative research design deploying semi-structured interview. The text deals with theoretical concepts of self-concept, self-esteem, and coping and links them with family-system theory. The focus is on influence of alcoholism on family with further attention to the impact on children. Further on, I analyze the state of development of research in the respective field in the Czech Republic and internationally. Finally the text investigates the recent state of knowledge of children of alcoholics. The empirical chapter consists of analysis of interviews with 5 adult children of alcoholics. The stress is on the emotional experience of parental alcoholism in childhood, ways of dealing with this situation and strategies of coping. The analysis also treats subjective experience of impacts of the alcoholic parent on the latter life and on their present self-concept.
