Presidential elections in Taiwan (2008) and foreign policy. Change or continuity?

Abstract:

Anotace: Bakalářská diplomová práce “Prezidentské volby na Taiwanu (2008) – Změna nebo kontinuita,” bude rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. V první, deskriptivní se práce zabývá stručným popisem historie, hlavních determinantů vývoje Taiwanské politiky, popisu politické scény, hlavních politických stran jejich politických preferencí a hlavně role prezidenta. Druhá, analytická část bude zaměřená přímo na osobu prezidenta a analýzu vlivu na směřování země jednotlivých předchozích představitelů tohoto postu. Z toho se pokusím vyvodit jaké můžeme očekávat důsledky prezidentských voleb v roce 2008 a tím ověřit hypotézu že: “Taiwanská politická scéna je natolik determinována ekonomickými, historickými a geopolitickými faktory, že změna vlády nemá výrazný vliv na směřování zahraniční politiky, stejně tak je tomu u funkce prezidenta.” Pokud budeme toto tvrzení demonstrovat například na jedné z hlavních otázek zahraniční politiky – vztahů s Čínou, bude výslednou politikou zachování statutu quo, bez ohledu na programy stran nebo politické preference.

Abstract:

Abstract : Bachelor Graduation “Presidential elections in Taiwan (2008) – Change or continuity?” will be divided into two parts. First, descriptive part focuses on main determinants of Taiwan’s foreign policy such as history, economy, international relations etc. This part also includes description of political scene, main political parties, preferences and mainly the role of president, based on Constitution. Second, analytic part will be focused on the president himself, analysis of former president's influence on the country's political direction. Based on this, I will try to deduce the effects of 2008 presidential elections and evaluate the hypothesis : Taiwan’s political scene is so determined by economical, historical and geopolitical factors , that change of government or president doesn’t have any major influence for country’s foreign policy orientation. . I will show that on major question for foreign policy – relations with China, which will result in keeping status quo, without difference when the opposition party reaches victory in elections.
