Learning English via social media: Conversation analysis of posts by popular TikTok accounts for learning languages.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse TikTok videos which focus on learning English. The thesis sets itself the goal of examining in what way this format of TikTok videos can be used for the purposes of learning foreign languages. The theoretical part is concerned with the introduction of social media and TikTok as well as the TikTok creators whose videos are analysed in this thesis. For the purposes of the analysis fifteen videos were chosen from three different creators. The data collected were subjected to conversational analysis. The analysis focuses on the structure of the videos, their characteristic linguistic features, nonverbal aspects as well as the dialogue and the function of hashtags and emojis. The main focus is on turn-taking and repair in conversation. The analysis showed that most of the analysed videos use repair in conversation as a form of teaching new vocabulary or expressions.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza videí na TikToku, která se soustředí na učení anglického jazyka. Tato práce si také dává za cíl prozkoumat, jakým způsobem lze tento formát videí využít pro účely výuky cizích jazyků. Teoretická část se zabývá představením sociálních médií a TikToku a také vybranými tvůrci, jejichž TikTok videa jsou v této práci analyzována. Za účelem této analýzy bylo vybráno patnáct videí od tří různých tvůrců. Shromážděná data byla podrobena konverzační analýze.. Analýza se zaměřuje na strukturu videí, jejich charakteristické jazykové rysy, nonverbální prvky, a stejně tak na dialog a funkci hashtagů a emotikonů. Pozornost je kladena hlavně na střídání v mluvení a opravu v rozhovoru. Analýza ukázala, že většina analyzovaných videí používá opravu v konverzaci jako formu výuky nové slovní zásoby a výrazů.
