Abstract:

Práce se zabývá odkazem, který dnešní Austrálii zanechali vězni transportovaní z Británie a jejích kolonií v letech 1788 – 1868. Tito vězni byli mezi prvními Evropany,jež se usadili na „novém“ kontinentu a v rané koloniální společnosti tvořili značnou většinu. Pro dnešní australskou společnost je jejich památka velmi důležitá, neboť tvoří nedílnou součást národní mytologie, na které je postavena(současná) australská národní identita. Ovšem, dříve než se v koloniální společnosti začaly objevovat první náznaky touhy po nezávislosti a sebeurčení, byla Austrálie vnímána čistě jen jako závislá britská kolonie. Práce mapuje vývoj patriotických postojů v australské společnosti v průběhu devatenáctého a dvacátého století a spojuje je s vězeňskou komunitou koloniální Austrálie. Argumenty jsou podpořeny citacemi z historických záznamů, studií, literatury devatenáctého století i literatury současné, a filmu. V práci je také zohledněn dnes populární fenomén turistické aktivity za australskou vězeňskou kulturou.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the convict legacy in Australia and describes the connection between the convict past and the Australian national identity, which has been largely built on the settler history of the continent. However, before the nationalist feelings emerged among the settlers in the second half of the nineteenth century, Australia was considered positively British. The thesis tracks the development of the public sentiment among the settlers from pro-British to anti-British and comments on the process of Australia’s differentiation from Britain. To illustrate the changing attitudes of the settler population, examples are drawn from the historical records, historical studies, nineteenth-century and contemporary fiction, film, and tourism.
