Higheways - social area in the late modernity

Abstract:

Ústředním tématem této práce je fenomén dálnice ve společnosti pozdní modernity. Na dálnici je pohlíženo jako na specifický typ sociálního prostoru se specifickými podmínkami, které jej v mnoha ohledech odlišují od tradičních míst sociální interakce. Dálnice je zasazena do prostředí tzv. automobilové kultury, která protíná značnou část společnosti pozdní modernity. Práce zkoumá podmínky vzniku a rozšíření dálničního prostoru v automobilové kultuře. Pojednává také o negativních vlivech dálnice na jiné sociální prostory. Podstatná část práce se věnuje signifikantnímu prvku automobilové kultury – samotnému automobilu. Ten je v dálničním prostoru významným činitelem v sociálním interakci jednotlivých sociálních aktérů. V neposlední řadě je v práci nastíněno, jaký způsobem se v sociální interakci v dálničním prostoru projevuje nástup moderních technologií a jakou úlohu mohou tyto technologie sehrát v budoucím vývoji dálnice.

Abstract:

The main focus of this thesis is on highways in the age of the late modernity. Highways are thought of as a distinctive type of social area with its characteristic conditions, many of which are different from conditions of traditional social spaces. Highways are set in the environment of so-called car-based culture which is characteristic of many societies in the late modernity. This paper examines the conditions which led both to emergence and expansion of highways throughout the car-based culture. Furthermore it deals with negative impacts that highways have on other types of social spaces. A big part of the thesis is devoted to the significant element of highways – to the automobile. This element plays a crucial role in social interaction which takes place on highways. Last but not least there is a passage that reviews the effect which many new technologies have had (and will potentially have in the future) on the social area of highways.
