Parent-child communication on death and dying

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá komunikací mezi rodiči a dětmi na téma smrti a umírání. Teoretická část popisuje postoj společnosti ke smrti, vývoj konceptu smrti, komunikaci v rodině a komunikaci o smrti. Cílem práce je prozkoumat otevřenost rodičů ke komunikaci o smrti a umírání s dětmi, dále jejich přesvědčení o tom, zda děti přemýšlejí o smrti, a postoj k těmto myšlenkám. Výzkumný soubor tvoří 268 rodičů dětí ve věku 4-8 let, z toho je 47 mužů a 221 žen. Průměrný věk je 35,74 roku. Rodiče se ukázali být otevření komunikaci na téma smrti a umírání na průměrné úrovni, otevřenost je ovlivněna především situací a zájmem ze strany dětí. Otevřenější jsou otcové než matky, a dále rodiče, kteří se domnívají, že jejich děti přemýšlejí o smrti. Postoj rodičů k tomu, že by děti přemýšlely o smrti, je nejednotný. Rodiče neupřednostňují žádnou strategii při vysvětlování smrti dětem, usilují o vysvětlení, které bude srozumitelné a šetrné.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on parent-child communication on death and dying. The theoretical part describes attitude of society towards death, development of death concept, family communication and communication on death. The aim of the thesis is to explore parents' openess to communication on death and dying with children, their beliefs about whether children think about death and attitude towards these thougths. Research group consists of 268 parents of children aged 4-8 years. There are 47 men and 221 women. The average age is 35,74 years. Parents proved to be open to communication on death and dying at an average level. The openess is based mainly on situation and childrens' interest. Fathers are more open to communication on death and dying then mothers, as well as are parents who believe that their children have thoughts about death. Attitudes towards these thoughts differ. Parents do not prefer any strategy for explaining death to children, they aim to choose understandable and sensitive explanation.
